HELP SURPRISE SILOWE TO GET OVER 1 MILLION SIGNATURES FOR A GOVERNMENT BAILOUT (NATIONAL TREASURY) TO CLEAR ALL STUDENTS HISTORICAL DEBTS ONCE & FOR ALL!
The current minister of Higher Education Naledi Pandor is on Record (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JGB4b44f9o) on the 12th of February 2019 to have said that in quantum, the students historic debt amount to over R9 billion.
Ailing State Owned Entities (SOEs), over the past years have been receiving substantial government guarantees and bailouts that far exceed the R9 billion debt of students.
Despite such hugebailouts, these SOEs such as Eskom and the SABC continue to show no positive sign of recovery and production: Loadshedding continues to engulf the country and the SABC is unable to secure broadcasting rights for national teams games.
To name a few bailouts over the past few years:
1. Eskom: The Public Investment Corporation(PIC) on behalf of Government EmployeesPension Fund (GEPF) bailed Eskom with R5 Billion, which was a government guarantee.
2. SABC: Recieved a R1,47 Billion bailout 2009 from Nedbank (Government guaranteed) & R1,2Billion. SAA: R5 Billion 2018 Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS).**
The incumbent minister of Finance Tito Mboweni in the 2019 budget speech must commit to and announce a government (National Treasury) backed bailout to clear off the R9 Billion students historical debt. If there can be over R10 Billion bailouts given year out for SOEs, surely for once and for all, the R9 Billion students debt can be effortlessly bailed out.
Help me as i join the progressive voice calling for the scrapping of #StudentsHistoricDebts to make it to the ministers’ 2019 Budget speech.
Why must there be a bail out of students historic debts?
Students are not ailing nor dysfunctional, but have a proven record of academic progress, The country’s economy is dependent on the production of relevant knowledge and skills. Students are the bedrock of economic growth.
Education should not be a commodity, it must be provided freely and universally accessible. Making education a commodity unfairly discriminates against the poor who cannot afford and it violates the basic, fundamental human rights as enshrined in our constitution.
The country’s economy is stagnant because of the lower absorption rate of graduates, Graduates are not able to use their qualifications since they are locked up by institutions for failure to settle their debts.
Lets join hands to depart from this wretched future many students across the nation will otherwise have to face, It starts with you, Say No to #StuddentsHistoricDebts!
