1. Support responsible Government Regulation of Dihydrogen Monoxide

Dihodrogen Monoxide, abbreviated DHMO, is dangerous. It is one of the best solvents known to human kind, and causes millions of dollars in oxidation just in the U.S. It can literally dissolve the minerals and nutrients in your blood. It is an odorless colorless compound that can kill. And guess what?

There is no government regulation of this dangerous chemical, not even the CDC regulates it, no required labeling and no regulations when it comes to this stuff in every house holds' tap water. Now, some taps have more of this stuff than others, it just depends on where you are in the U.S.A. In the small amounts that it comes out of your faucet in, it will not kill you. But, in large enough amounts, It has been known to kill.

There are a few documented cases of this happening every year. It is a critical component of many poisons and explosives used in terrorist attacks and assassinations. DHMO is actually the primary means by which wildlife and ocean life are poisoned and exposed to horrible toxic and nuclear waste. DHMO is also in Acid Rain, and is found in almost all cancerous tumors in some quantity.

It is also a byproduct of toxic nuclear reactions. For further information on DHMO, and the shocking truth of the dangers this chemical poses to humans and wildlife alike, please visit

2. Stop Duke Energy Injecting Chemicals into Soil to Stunt Tree Growth

A Duke Energy experiment with using chemicals to keep tree limbs away from power lines has spurred complaints from homeowners concerned about environmental hazards and the health of their trees.

Workers are sweeping through Myers Park, Dilworth, Plaza Midwood and other leafy neighborhoods, injecting the soil surrounding trees with Cambistat, a product that stunts the growth of limbs.

Duke and the Minnesota-based manufacturer, Rainbow Treecare, insist that the product poses no threat to humans or pets. In fact, they say, it makes trees stronger.

But some residents are angry that workers showed up in their yards in recent weeks without warning. They contend that chemicals put into the soil could leach into groundwater or harm nearby plants and vegetable gardens.

Jane Burts of Myers Park said she was startled when she saw a Duke Energy contractor inspecting a tree in her yard.

When she confronted the man, Burts said he told her that the chemical injection would slow the growth of trees and nearby plants. He also said that as a precaution, he would keep children and dogs from digging around the trees for a few days, Burts said.

“It doesn’t feel good,” said Burts, who refused to allow the worker to inject Cambistat. “There seems to be a lot of questions.”

Duke Energy spokeswoman Paige Layne acknowledged that the company made a mistake when it did not warn property owners that workers would come onto their property.

“The only thing I can do is apologize,” Layne said.

Asked about safety concerns, Layne said Cambistat has been approved by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Layne stressed that homeowners can decline to have the product used on trees on their property, saying Duke will consider discontinuing the injections if too many people opt out.

But workers do not need permission from residents to inject soil in the public right of way.

How Cambistat works

Charlotte is ranked among the top cities in the nation for urban forests, which experts say improve aesthetics, increase property values and save energy. Nearly half of the city has tree cover, and the City Council has set a goal to increase that number.

However, tall, mature trees threaten Duke Energy’s ability to deliver power to homes. The company sends workers to prune tree limbs that interfere with power lines, often enduring criticism from residents and high costs.

In response, the company has contracted with Rainbow Treecare to see whether chemical injections can reduce tree trimming in Charlotte, Greensboro and Durham, Layne said.

In Charlotte, she said, crews will inject soil in the Dilworth, Myers Park, Sedgefield and Plaza Midwood neighborhoods and along Park Road in south Charlotte.

Workers inject Cambistat into soil at the tree’s base, where it can be absorbed into the roots. Cambistat slows branch growth by 40 percent to 70 percent by altering a tree’s hormones, according to Duke and Rainbow Treecare.

Cambistat has been used safely across the country for more than a decade, said Tom Prosser, CEO and founder of Rainbow Treecare.

Prosser said the product is popular with arborists, who use it to heal unhealthy trees. Cambistat makes trees more tolerant of extreme heat and drought, he said.

Charlotte arborist Don McSween said city officials agreed last month to allow chemical injections on trees in the public right of way. McSween said he raised no objections since Cambistat was tested near the streets in west Charlotte several years ago.

But McSween said he might have more concerns about using the product on private property because plants near treated soil could have their growth stunted.

A Duke official recently spoke at a Freedom Park Neighborhood Association meeting to allay fears, said Mary Lou Buck, a board member.

Buck said the dozen or so people who attended the meeting were not convinced the chemical injection was safe.

“They are very frustrated about how it was handled,” because they felt Rainbow Tree couldn’t answer their questions, Buck said.

‘The right tree in the right place’

State environmental groups said they were unaware that Duke had launched the experiment.

Fawn Pattison, a senior advocate for Raleigh-based Toxic Free NC, said she is worried for Charlotte’s trees, which already suffer from the city’s poor air quality.

Told about claims that Cambistat makes trees strong and poses no threat to humans, Pattison said she is skeptical.

Dave Cable, director of TreesCharlotte, which promotes the city’s goal to have 50 percent tree coverage by 2050, said Duke is in a difficult position.

“The arborist rule is ‘the right tree in the right place,’ ” Cable said. “Unfortunately, we’ve got a lot of trees not abiding by that golden rule. Duke’s kind of up against the wall.”

3. Stop the fluoridation of our drinking water

We are extremely alarmed and angrily concerned about the fluoride that is beeing dumped in our water supply.

Fluoride is a known Toxin it has been identified as a Toxin and is linked to various cancerous chemicals, studies have also shown that it does absolutley nothing for the teeth and gums and out of 1 in 3 children its known to cause discoloration and irreversible damage to teeth and enamel.

In a major report written by the National Academy of Science it stated that toxic levels can lead to severe pitting of the teeth enamel in children. Fluoride can also build up in the bones to cause pain, stiff joints and skeletal abnormalities.

A chemical called d-limonene has been used as a pesticide/insectiside in pet products for about 20 years or so. The EPA regulates this chemical along with the CPSC.

I researched what this chemical can do to our dogs and cats and below are just a handful of studies among the many I found:

~~Dogs experiencing epidermal necrosis associated with d-limoene are usually in pain and systemically ill. Anemia and liver and kidney damage may also occur. Supportive care is usually essential until the condition resolves. Severe forms of this condition are similar in severity to what is seen in third degree burn victims, with extensive skin damage resulting in skin sloughing, depression, shock, coma and often death. See Kirk's Current Veterinary Therapy XIII 1999. pp.556; Muller and Kirk's Small Animal Dermatology 1995; pp.590;

~~ Natural insecticidal dips or sprays containing citrus extract d-limonene, 50% of the 24 animal cases developed clinical signs of adverse health reactions whether or not product was used appropriately or inappropriately. 92% of animals experienced one or more of an adverse health condition. Study from Jrnl. of Veterinary Emergency Critical Care Society 2012 pp1-6

~~Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis associated with flea dips containing d-limonene --Vet Hum Toxicol 1992 Feb
TEN --a life-threatening skin condition that the top layer of skin (the epidermis) detaches from the lower layers of the skin (the dermis) all over the body. Sepsis is secondary problem often fatal disease.

~~Erythema Multiforme major and disseminated intravascular coagulation developed in a dog 24 hrs. following application of a d-limonene insecticidal dip. Despite intensive supportive care, the dog developed severe necrosis and widespread hemorrhage within organs and died -- J Am Vet Med Assoc. 1995 Nov.

People love their animals and they need to be made aware of these statistics to help pet owners make informed decisions regarding their pet's care. Dog and cat owners deserve to know this type of knowledge. Even I a doting pet owner never knew of this potent chemical. This chemical does not have the attention it should that it is this problematic to our companion pets.

Together we can demand our state law makers to not allow for another pet to become so ill or die by discontinuing the use of d-limonene in pet products. Please help our pets safety. If a chemical is proving over and over to have risks to our pets lives, it should not be allowed.

Dogs and cats have such a short life span on this earth so why shorten it even more by allowing a chemical like this to be used?

5. Investigate Toxic PCB's on Canadian Warships

Canadian Navy destroyers, tankers, and destroyer escort ships built in the 1950's and 1960's contained toxic PCB's: "Any of a family of industrial compounds produced by chlorination of biphenyl, noted primarily as an environmental pollutant that accumulates in animal tissue with resultant pathogenic and teratogenic effects."

Polychlorinated biphenyl, or PCB's are known to cause cancer, genetic, and neurological disorders in those exposed to them, even over a short period of time. The above mentioned warships were eventually sunk as artificial reefs after decommissioning, and divers later found high levels of PCB's emanating from them. While this poses a risk to marine, plant-life, and recreational divers, what about the 10's of thousands of Naval personnel who lived, worked, and sailed on these vessels during their 30 year life span?

Record of the discovery can be found in many news archives, this is one as an example:

Ships used as reefs contain PCBs - CBC

Fluoride is a poison that causes numerous health problems and our City has voted against the removal of it for years despite the cities around us passing the vote. Many studies have shown the effects of fluoride on the human body and some of the problems include but are not limited to,

This Petition is important because this is a real poison that we are given daily and have no choice whether or not to consume it.

7. To remove fluoride from the water supply of the City of Elliot Lake, Ontario

Please sign this petition if you oppose the use of fluoride in the water supply of the City of Elliot Lake, Ontario.

8. Remove Fluoride From Municipal Water Supply in Tulsa

Fluoride was added to the water under a false pretence that it helped tooth decay.

There is no scientific proof to back this up. Fluoride is a highly toxic substance.

It is lethal in high doses.

9. Ban Toxic Baby Wipes

The toxic ingredient (iodopropynyl butylcarbamate - IPBC) is found in many brands of baby wipes in Australia. It is known to cause skin irritation, is readily absorbed through the skin, and in animal testing was found to be acutely toxic when inhaled.

New Zealand cosmetic standards list IPBC as not to be used in preparations for children under 3 (except below certain levels in bath products, shower gels and shampoo) and the European Union has banned IPBC use in oral hygiene and lip care products.

Several leading supermarkets in New Zealand have removed baby wipes containing IPBC and yet it is still sold in Australia in products which come into direct contact with an infant's skin from birth.

Bub Hub Mums want the best for their children. This product should not be on the shelves.

10. Save the Population: Stand Up To Dangerous Toxic Chemical Bisphosphonates

Stand up to harmful dangerous toxic chemical Bisphosphonates Drugs that dates back to the 1800’s…Osteoporosis Drugs claim to cure or prevent Osteoporosis, cause cancer of the esophagus, stomach, lungs, breast, liver, and varies other cancers.

They also cause broken bones, femur fractures, thigh pain, osteonecrosis of the jaw known, as phossy jaw, ulcers, gastrointestinal problems, bleeding from the rectum, black tarry bloody stools, swelling around the neck, swelling under the eyes, spots on the lungs and tumors in the liver. These are not all the side effect from Actonel Risedronate sodium and all other Bisphosphonates.

Fact: Actonel and all other Bisphosphonates cause life threatening side effects, including deaths in Humans and Animals.

Fact: Actonel severe adverse side effects have been known and proven to occur, as early as, eight months in a patient, not to mention all other Bisphosphonates.

Fact: This Osteoporosis drug that breaks bones and cause cancer is combined and link to phosphorous/phosphonic, phosphonic acid and Phosphoric/phosphoric acid, along with formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane, ethylene oxide and a host of other dangerous combined combination of drugs.

Like calcium, the bones need phosphorous to stay strong. However, ingesting Phosphonic acid/phosphorous or phosphoric acid in medication over time can cause phosphorous levels to climb too high. This will limit the amount of calcium the bones can absorb, which will lead to weak, breakable bones.

Phosphorus acids/white phosphorus erode the teeth and gums, leaving cavities that fill with bacterial infection producing pus, weakening the jaw bone, sometimes until the jaw abscess, rots and falls out. Surgical removal of the afflicted jaw bones was sometimes necessary to save the patient’s life. Otherwise, death from organ failure would invariably result. It is possible to develop this condition many years after having stopped taking the dangerous bisphosphonates.

White phosphorus is known as yellow phosphorus, red and black phosphorus can be converted to white phosphorus by heating it under pressure. Osteonecrosis of the jaw is not the first, but is known, as the second dangerous severe epidemic of phossy jaw, which was known as the first epidemic of bone cancer in the upper jaw and the jawbone in the 1800's.

The most chronic phosphorus poisoning is osteomyelitis of the jaw bones.

Phossy jaw is a form of bone cancer caused by bisphosphonate. Since the 1800’s the old disease, namely phossy jaw, name has been change. Phossy jaw new name is osteonecrosis of the jaw, which is also caused by bisphosphonate that contains white phosphorous.

Fact: A so called, small trace of Actonel’s dangerous chemical mixture, which contains, White phosphorous/phosphonic, crospovidone/polyvinylpyrrolidone, which contains formaldehyde, Polyethylene glycol, which contains formaldehyde, 1,4-dioxane and ethylene oxide, as well as, titanium dioxide, mixed with other small traces of dangerous chemicals and contaminants that cause cancer are excessively, dangerous and a deadly explosive pill for humans and animals to ingested.

NOTED: When humans and animals Ingested one dose of Actonel into their bodies, they have ingested 2 doses of formaldehyde (a chemical that is known to cause cancer), a dose of 1,4dioxane (a contaminants that may cause cancer), a dose of ethylene oxide (cause cancer), a dose of Phosphorous (causes bone cancer, bones to break, phossy jaw and Osteonecrosis of the jaw) along, with more doses of other dangerous toxic chemicals, as well.

Actonel risedronate and all other bisphosphonates must be taken off the market immediately, until more proven studies have been done to make these drugs safe for the consumers.

Like most medications, Actonel and other bisphosphonates, truthful, informing or surprised information will not be given to the consumers, because of the Trade Secret Law, which allow Pharmaceutical Companies to not list all the ingredients, chemicals and contaminants in their medications, on the product labels, even if the medication cause cancer or deaths...

11. Ban Hydraulic Fracturing for natural gas in Ireland

We are calling on the Irish Government to immediately ban the process known as Hydraulic Fracturing (fracking) in Ireland.

Hydraulic fracturing is the method used for the extraction of natural gas (shale gas) from the ground.

This horizontal drilling process involves the pumping of millions of gallons of water, mixed with hundreds of highly toxic chemicals, thousands of feet deep into the ground.

Already in the U.S.A and Australia, pollution caused by this process to land, to air, to surface water and to groundwater has resulted in a terrible health toll and catastrophic environmental damage. Countless cases of death have been reported among wildlife and livestock.

A litany of serious ‘fracking’ related health problems for people in communities in areas where this technology has been used have also come to light.

Because of this damning body of evidence, which includes academic reports (1), moratoria on ‘fracking’ have been put in place in the state of New York, in the state of New Jersey, in the North Rhine Westphalia (Germany), in South Africa. The French Government has recently banned hydraulic fracturing in France.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has only recently begun an investigation into the safety of the process. Their final report is not expected until 2014. At present in Ireland there is no regulation in existence that covers this extraction method, and there has been no research published into the potential consequences of such activity here.

Presently, a number of oil and gas companies who have already been granted exploratory licences, are preparing to use this process to profit from shale gas in the Lough Allen and Clare Basin Regions – an area which includes twelve counties (2).

If hydraulic fracturing is allowed the aftermath may be an irreversible disaster for us and our environment. It may result in the contamination of our water table and of Ireland’s most extensive and important river and lake network.

We will not allow the safety of our water and the health of our children to be put at risk.

12. Save the rainforest and the people!

Chevron a world company which resulted in an oilspill in the Amazon rainforest, which killed thousands possibly millions of animals and people living in the rainforest.

They also caused sorrow to and orphaned thousands more. Now they have vowed never to clean up their toxic mess. This is their mess and they should clean it up before any more lives are lost.

13. Stop Fluoridation of Des Moines public water supply!

* The FDA classifies fluoride as an "unapproved prescription drug" and has not approved it for ingestion!

* Citizens of Des Moines are being medicated without consent and against their will!

* The EPA allows fluoride to be added to our drinking water, yet silicofluorides have never been safety tested!

Des Moines Water Works recently made the decision to continue fluoridating municipal water. They claim to provide citizens "with a safe, clean, healthy water supply" despite any safety testing.

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie has stated that "citizen safety and health is our top priority" despite any safety testing.

14. Protect Your Community from Toxic Mercury

The Environmental Protection Agency is proposing long over-due Clean Air Act standards to protect our nation's communities from the threats of toxic air pollution produced by power plants.

Power plants are the largest source of toxic air pollution in our country but no national standards exits to protect us from the toxic air pollution from these sources.

15. Support BatteryBack & Save The Planet!

Did you know Australians use approximately 10,000 tonnes of domestic batteries each year? Almost all of these will end up in landfill and have the potential to contaminate soil and groundwater.

Even more importantly, batteries are RECYCLABLE. They contain valuable components such as cadmium and zinc, which, if recovered, can be reused in different products and diverted from landfill.

BatteryBack was set up by Sustainability Victoria to gather battery waste-stream information for the Australian Battery Recycling Initiative (ABRI), who aims to develop an industry-wide, national level recycling programme for batteries funded voluntarily by the manufacturers themselves.

Battery recycling in Australia is not free – BatteryBack forwards on the collected batteries to the AusBatt Recycling service. AusBatt does not process enough batteries to fund their activities purely through the reclaimed materials as Australia is not a large enough supply. It is fiscally cheaper to produce batteries from virgin materials, however environmental and social costs are not considered and dumping used batteries in landfill is costing our environment dearly.

Batteryback is scheduled to terminate at the end of June 2011 (though you can still recycle your batteries through Battery World ( and IKEA.) BatteryBack varies to other programs that recycle battery waste in that it aims to play a part in informing industry on the costs and operational requirements associated with running a take-back scheme. This is why it is vital we act to keep this programme going to support the ABRI in developing a national strategy to make battery recycling easily available to all Australians.

We believe, as the ABRI does, the costs involved in battery recycling should be covered by battery manufacturers. By asking manufacturers take environmental responsibility for their products we will be strengthening the most important part of the campaign for a national recycling model. If manufacturers do not believe people are concerned about battery recycling it is less likely they will voluntarily fund these programmes. It is by far the most powerful message we can send.

If manufacturers supported these measures, it would provide a sealed loop, protecting the environment and creating a higher initial battery cost, encouraging consumers to source out battery free alternatives or long-life, rechargeable battery electronics (for example, a camera that uses L-ion rather than 4 double a's).

16. Stop Australia's use of the Poison Methyl Bromide

Methyl Bromide (Bromomethane) is a toxic Chemical which is recognized as an ozone depleting substance, has been banned in Europe and has dangerous Respiratory, kidney, and neurological effects.

This poison is used as a fumigant for many products brought into Australia, including some food products as well as all wood products.

Most conventional rice products have been fumigated by this poison, and there is no way of knowing what has been fumigated as it is odorless.

Methyl Bromide is deadly and its use should be illegal.
Everyone should have the right of a safe planet to live in.

17. Recycle the ex-HMAS Adelaide - Don't dump it at Avoca Beach

In March 2010 the State and Federal Government attempted to dispose of a 4000 tonne warship the ex-HMAS Adelaide offshore from Avoca Beach as an 'artificial reef.'

The residents of Avoca are strongly opposed to this dumping of naval waste in a pristine bay with world famous surf.

Residents appealed the Sea Dumping Permit in the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and achieved in a six month legal case:
- the removal of all remaining fibreglass insulation;
- all remaining cables and junction boxes associated with PCBs and;
- 'exfoliating' red lead paint.

The community is opposed to 23,000 square metres of red lead paint being placed in the bay.

Coastal engineers have reported that the studies of potential impacts to the shoreline and waves are incomplete and misleading. More studies must be done to understand potential impacts on beach erosion and waves.

This sea dumping is not worth the risk to one of the best beaches on our beautiful coastline.

This obsolete warship should be responsibly recycled on land not dumped in our ocean placing marine life, our children's health and our beach at risk for 250 years.

18. Keep San Francisco's Waste Stream Green

The City of San Francisco is currently reviewing HOW and WHERE to dump our garbage. A billion-dollar contract will be awarded for taking the most toxic of our waste, the non-recyclable trash, to a landfill.

Keep San Francisco's Waste Stream Green is a group of concerned residents calling on the City and County of San Francisco to conduct a full environmental impact study of the different options available. It is our waste, so it's our responsibility to remove and dispose of it in the most environmentally friendly manner possible.

San Francisco, green and progressive, leads the nation in recycling and composting, but we still send 1,800 tons of trash to a landfill every day! Do you know where our non-recyclable trash goes now, and where it may go in 2015?

Since 1987 our trash has been going to the nearby Altamont Landfill located in the arid hills of the Inner Coast Range, about 50 miles from San Francisco and far removed from the rich agricultural central valley of California. Therefore, any leakage from the landfill would cause no damage to agricultural farm land. Furthermore, the Altamont landfill has the capacity to take San Francisco's trash for the next 35 to 50 years.

The S.F. Department of the Environment recently recommended that beginning in 2015, San Francisco send its non-recyclable trash 130 miles to the Ostrom Rd. Landfill in Yuba County, the poorest county in the state. Surprisingly, they made this recommendation without ever visiting this site, located amid orchards and farmland.

The current proposal has been assigned to the Budget and Finance Committee for consideration before it will go to the full Board of Supervisors for final approval.

This is a petition to ask the city council of Alboraya, in Valencia, Spain, not to use toxic chemicals to fumigate the area of Patacona, where Elvira Roda resides. She suffers from Multiple Chemical Syndromme and due to the severity of her illness, the use of pesticides such as the Organophosphorus which are currently being used in her area, could be very damaging to her health. Avoiding these kind of toxic chemicals will also be very beneficial, they know it or not, to her neighbours.

We are asking the city council of Alboraya to use different products which are not dangerous for human health and that of the environment, and are indeed available.

You can find some information on the situation of Elvira Roda's neighbourhood by visiting these links, some of which we show you through google translate:

21. Banning Aspartame and MSG from the Safe List on FDA

Remember: By FDA definition, all MSG is "naturally occurring." "Natural" doesn't mean "safe." "Natural" only means that the ingredient started out in nature.

What the FDA actually stated in 1995 about Monosodium Glutamate:

"A 1995 report from the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB), an independent body of scientists identifies two groups of people who may develop a condition the report refers to as 'MSG symptom complex.' One group is those who may be intolerant to MSG when eaten in a large quantity. The second is a group of people with severe, poorly controlled asthma. These people, in addition to being prone to MSG symptom complex, may suffer temporary worsening of asthmatic symptoms after consuming MSG. The MSG dosage that produced reactions in these people ranged from 0.5 grams to 2.5 grams...

"The agency believes that the report provides the basis to require glutamate labeling. FDA will propose that foods containing significant amounts of free glutamate (not bound in protein along with other amino acids) declare glutamate on the label. This would allow consumers to distinguish between foods with insignificant free glutamate levels and those that might contribute to a reaction...

"Among the report's key findings:

An unknown percentage of the population may react to MSG and develop MSG symptom complex, a condition characterized by one or more of the following symptoms:

burning sensation in the back of the neck, forearms and chest

numbness in the back of the neck, radiating to the arms and back

tingling, warmth and weakness in the face, temples, upper back, neck and arms

facial pressure or tightness

chest pain

rapid heartbeat

bronchospasm (difficulty breathing) in MSG-intolerant people with asthma

"In otherwise healthy MSG-intolerant people, the MSG symptom complex tends to occur within one hour after eating 3 grams or more of MSG on an empty stomach or without other food. A typical serving of glutamate-treated food contains less than 0.5 grams of MSG. A reaction is most likely if the MSG is eaten in a large quantity or in a liquid, such as a clear soup.

"Severe, poorly controlled asthma may be a predisposing medical condition for MSG symptom complex...

"The level of vitamin B6 in a person's body plays a role in glutamate metabolism, and the possible impact of marginal B6 intake should be considered in future research...

"While technically MSG is only one of several forms of free glutamate used in foods, consumers frequently use the term MSG to mean all free glutamate. For this reason, FDA considers foods whose labels say 'No MSG' or 'No Added MSG' to be misleading if the food contains ingredients that are sources of free glutamates, such as hydrolyzed protein...

"In 1993, FDA proposed adding the phrase '(contains glutamate)' to the common or usual names of certain protein hydrolysates that contain substantial amounts of glutamate. For example, if the proposal were adopted, hydrolyzed soy protein would have to be declared on food labels as 'hydrolyzed soy protein (contains glutamate).'" ...

Unfortunately, for those with asthma, migraine, and atrial fibrillation, MSG as free glutamate remains a hidden food ingredient. This FDA labeling proposal was killed by a powerful food lobby.

Nutrasweet (brand name for Aspartame) was not approved until 1981, in dry foods. For over eight years the FDA refused to approve it because of the seizures and brain tumors this drug produced in lab animals. The FDA continued to refuse to approve it until President Reagan took office (a friend of Searle) and fired the FDA Commissioner who wouldn't approve it. Dr. Arthur Hull Hayes was appointed as commissioner. Even then there was so much opposition to approval that a Board of Inquiry was set up. The Board said: "Do not approve aspartame". Dr. Hayes OVERRULED his own Board of Inquiry.

Shortly after Commissioner Arthur Hull Hayes, Jr., approved the use of aspartame in carbonated beverages, he left for a position with G.D. Searle's Public Relations firm.

Long-Term Damage. It appears to cause slow, silent damage in those unfortunate enough to not have immediate reactions and a reason to avoid it. It may take one year, five years, 10 years, or 40 years, but it seems to cause some reversible and some irreversible changes in health over long-term use.

METHANOL (AKA WOOD ALCOHOL/POISON) (10% OF ASPARTAME) Methanol/wood alcohol is a deadly poison. People may recall that methanol was the poison that has caused some "skid row" alcoholics to end up blind or dead. Methanol is gradually released in the small intestine when the methyl group of aspartame encounter the enzyme chymotrypsin.

The absorption of methanol into the body is sped up considerably when free methanol is ingested. Free methanol is created from aspartame when it is heated to above 86 Fahrenheit (30 Centigrade). This would occur when aspartame-containing product is improperly stored or when it is heated (e.g., as part of a "food" product such as Jello).

Methanol breaks down into formic acid and formaldehyde in the body. Formaldehyde is a deadly neurotoxin. An EPA assessment of methanol states that methanol "is considered a cumulative poison due to the low rate of excretion once it is absorbed. In the body, methanol is oxidized to formaldehyde and formic acid; both of these metabolites are toxic." The recommend a limit of consumption of 7.8 mg/day. A one-liter (approx. 1 quart) aspartame-sweetened beverage contains about 56 mg of methanol. Heavy users of aspartame-containing products consume as much as 250 mg of methanol daily or 32 times the EPA limit.

The most well known problems from methanol poisoning are vision problems. Formaldehyde is a known carcinogen, causes retinal damage, interferes with DNA replication, and causes birth defects. Due to the lack of a couple of key enzymes, humans are many times more sensitive to the toxic effects of methanol than animals. Therefore, tests of aspartame or methanol on animals do not accurately reflect the danger for humans. As pointed out by Dr Woodrow C. Monte, Director of the Food Science and Nutrition Laboratory at Arizona State University, "There are no human or mammalian studies to evaluate the possible mutagenic, teratogenic, or carcinogenic effects of chronic administration of methyl alcohol."

It has been pointed out that fruit juices and alcoholic beverages contain small amounts of methanol. It is important to remember, that the methanol in natural products never appears alone. In every case, ethanol is present, usually in much higher amounts. Ethanol is an antidote for methanol toxicity in humans.

The troops of Desert Storm were "treated" to large amounts of aspartame-sweetened beverages which had been heated to over 86 degrees F. in the Saudi Arabian sun. Many of them returned home with numerous disorders similar to what has been seen in persons who have been chemically poisoned by formaldehyde. The free methanol in the beverages may have been a contributing factor in these illnesses. Other breakdown products ofaspartame such as DKP, may also have been a factor.

In a 1993 act that can only be described as "unconscionable", the FDA approved aspartame as an ingredient in numerous food items that would always be heated to above 86°degrees F (30°Degrees C).

Much worse, on 27 June 1996, without public notice, the FDA removed all restrictions from aspartame allowing it to be used in everything, including all heated and baked goods.

The truth about aspartame's toxicity is far different than what the NutraSweet Company would have you readers believe. In February of 1994, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services released the listing of adverse reactions reported to the FDA (DHHS 1994). Aspartame accounted for more than 75% of all adverse reactions reported to the FDA's Adverse Reaction Monitoring System (ARMS). By the FDA's own admission fewer then ONE PERCENT of those who have problems with something they consume ever report it to the FDA. This balloons the almost 10,000 complaints they once had to around a million.

However, the FDA has a record keeping problem (they never did respond to the certified letter from the WEBMASTER of this site a major victim!) and they tend to discourage or even misdirect complaints, at least on aspartame. The fact remains, though, that MOST victims don't have a clue that aspartame may be the cause of their many problems! Many reactions to aspartame were very serious including seizures and death.

22. Support RATWISE, Outlaw toxic waste in the south east!

Toxic waste is called toxic because it is hazardous to our health. Dumping of toxic waste in Lyndhurst, in the south east of Melbourne continues to this day, and is too close to residences and compromises the health and safety of local communities.

The legalities of the toxic waste being deposited there are still being tested. Even so, we should not have our health and safety compromised, and there must be better ways to manage toxic waste.

23. International Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products

A comprehensive investigation conducted by the well reputed Environmental Working Group has revealed that a third of the 7,500 cosmetic and personal care products assessed contained chemicals that are linked to cancer.

Of the more than 10,000 chemical ingredients in personal care products, 89 percent have not undergone safety testing.

Consumers use as many as 25 different cosmetics products in a day and up to 70% of what is applied to the skin is believed to be absorbed into the body.

Many of these chemicals have found their way into our bodies, our breast milk and our children, and diseases linked to synthetic chemicals - including breast cancer, testicular cancer and reproductive problems - are on the rise.

24. Increase Pesticide Safety Standards

Pesticides are used to prevent, destroy, repel or mitigate any pest that puts a crop in danger. The problem is, that the use up pesticides puts us in danger.

EPA licenses pesticides for use in accordance with label directions, based on review of scientific studies on the pesticide to determine that it will not pose unreasonable risks to human health or the environment. Hoever, there are still risks. I feel that the EPA could do more then they curently are for everyones safety. Check out the EPA's website and decide for yourself!

25. Save animals from daily abuse

Millions of animals die everyday, do you know why? Abuse! In animal labs people cut the vocal cords of the animals so the public can't hear their cries. For what? Nothing! It's useless! Here is an example: Chocolate is toxic to dogs, it isn't toxic to humans. Do you know where people get the animals for labs? They steal other people's pets! Can you imagine, an animal who is used to never being harmed by humans and who has always been well loved and cared for is suddenly being tortured to death by humans. It makes me sick. It isn't just animal labs though. There is a hunting club in Florida where they use dogs to track down the wounded deer. Someone was teasing another person's dog and the dog bit them. The next day, the person who got bit called the dog to him. The dog came over, wagging his tail and expecting praise. Instead of praise it got shot in the head. Help the animals in the world: sign this and keep other animals from having the same fate as many others.
