In the Defense of Marriage Act of 1996, it is stated:

Section 3. Definition of marriage
In determining the meaning of any Act of Congress, or of any ruling, regulation, or interpretation of the various administrative bureaus and agencies of the United States, the word 'marriage' means only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife, and the word 'spouse' refers only to a person of the opposite sex who is a husband or a wife.

Yet, the Obama administration announced in 2011 that it had determined that Section 3 was unconstitutional and, though it would continue to enforce the law, it would no longer defend it in court.

Why should gay marriage be bound to a law that our own presidential administration states is unconstitutional? We fight for our freedoms. Some men and women in the military, and on our homefronts in the law enforcement, fire department, and EMS departments, are bi-sexual, lesbian, or gay.

We, the undersigned, call upon the North Carolina State Legislation, to overthrow The North Carolina Same-Sex Marriage Amendment, that would ban same-sex marriage permanently from the North Carolina state constitution.

Everywhere we look in America, we see that there is no prejudice against gender, race, sexual preferences, religions preferences, etc. This is found in every day life, including, but not limited to: Jobs, political parties, voting, etc. Why should it be allowed to pass an Amendment that goes against our freedoms as American citizens, so that we do not turn into another country that prohibits things such as same-sex marriage?

If we allow this amendment to happen, we are allowing ourselves to cripple our rights and freedoms in American society. Judgment should never be passed upon a human being for what they wish to do, as long as it is not causing harm to another in any way whatsoever. Yet, state legislatures are doing just that. Prohibiting a person's way of life. A way they are, who they are, and how they live comfortably.

We were able to make it so that race was not an issue, and can be treated as equals. We made it so that women and men alike have equal rights. Why is it that gays/lesbians/bi-sexuals cannot have the same equal rights as the rest of the nation?

We must come together as a group, and peacefully petition this amendment to NOT get passed!
