Whereas, cobalt is a critical element of most electronic devices including smart phones and electric vehicles;
Whereas, the the vast majority of cobalt is mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC);
Whereas, miners of cobalt in the Democratic Republic of Congo include children and women with infants who make less than a dollar per day;
Whereas, current cobalt mining operations generate toxic byproducts that pollute the air, water and land, severely endangering the health of miners and anyone living near a cobalt mine;
Whereas, the DRC has been subject to massive deforestation and the loss of arable farmland due to ever expanding cobalt operations;
Whereas Tesla and Apple are the primary beneficiaries of the cobalt mined with slave and child labor in a way that is destroying the environment;
Whereas it is within the power of Tesla and Apple to use their market dominance to force immediate change in working and environmental conditions in the DRC
We the undersigned call on the CEOs and shareholders of Tesla and Apple to immediately:
> tour the cobalt mines in the DRC
> demand a substantial increase in wages for cobalt miners
> make direct investment in health services
> make direct investment in environmental remediation
> refuse to purchase any cobalt that is mined in an unsustainable manner
> demand and make direct investment in personal protective equipment (PPE)
> host a summit of all major multinational companies who produce goods that use cobalt
