Create a Safe School Environment

School shootings related to gun violence have become rampant in our nation since the 1990s, and escalated even more so since the start of 2018 with nearly one shooting every week on average. Our students and children deserve a safe public school environment where they can learn without fear of violence. In order to attain this, all public schools in Virginia should be required to have metal detectors at their entrances; a police officer within the school or on its grounds for the duration of the school day; and teachers who already possess a permit for concealed carry should be allowed to do so safely within their school in order to protect their students and themselves. If these policies were implemented, countless lives could be saved. This is no longer a matter of left or right politics: it is a matter of protecting and saving lives.
We, the people and voters of Virginia, demand safe public school environments for our students and children. School shootings related to gun violence have escalated to a rate that is unacceptable and catastrophic. We mandate that our public schools implement the following preventative measures to protect our students and children: metal detectors at the entrances to all public schools; at least one police officer in a public school building or on its grounds for the entire duration of the school day; and teachers that have already obtained or are interested in obtaining a concealed carry permit be allowed to carry safely in order to protect their students, coworkers, and themselves. We will not remain passive in this time of aggression. We will expect protection and safety in this time of crisis.
Our children deserve a safe school environment dedicated to learning and development and free from fear. We are counting on you, our representatives and senators, to protect our children and students from future gun violence. No more innocent lives lost to school gun violence.
