Child Protection workers dedicate their careers to caring for our State's most vulnerable children.
The safety of these children and young people is of paramount importance to our members, but to provide safe environments child protection workers must also be safe.
A key recommendation from the Nyland Royal Commission, 150-c, recognised the substantial risk associated with staff working in single-handed shifts, and recommended that single-handed shifts be abandoned.
Now more than 18 months since the recommendations were released, single-handed shifts HAVE NOT BEEN ABANDONED, putting staff and children in potentially high risk situations.
The Public Service Association demands that single-handed shifts be abandoned immediately to increase the safety of children in care, and to improve safety for child protection workers.
We the undersigned call on the Government to increase staffing in Child Protection so there are always at least two people on a shift in Residential Care.
This is in support of Recommendation 150-c of the Child Protection Systems Royal Commission Report by Commissioner Nyland which states the Government should 'abandon single-handed shifts' in Child Protection.
