Target:
The Chair Person ,National Task Force For Covid-19.
Region:
Uganda

I have observed that members in the media fraternity (DJs, Journalists, e.t.c.) and other vulnerable groups such as the boda boda riders, bar attendants, e.t.c. are being supplied with food and other relief items. This is in accordance with the pronouncements of His Excellency the President. However, nobody seems to be minding about TEACHERS .
Teachers are among the poorly paid and poorly motivated workers in this country. They were among the first category of workers to be affected by the President's declaration of a nationwide lockdown on 18th March 2020.
Just about a month ago the media (Newspapers and TV stations) was awash with the story of a teacher in the Eastern region who committed suicide because of lack of food. Many teachers are quietly managing through this lockdown, for there is no voice to speak for them.
Teachers are the backbone of any and every society. Only when the welfare of teachers is prioritised will the status and quality of education be achieved. Nobody has identified with the suffering teachers. Not even the Ministry of Education and Sports, Uganda National Teachers Union (UNATU), ASSHU and individual head teachers in schools have thought of rescuing teachers from untold suffering and pain during these trying Covid-19 times.

As teachers in private schools and PTA teachers in government schools we call upon the National Task Force for COVID-19 and the President of the Republic of Uganda H.E Y. K. Museveni to come to our rescue and help us through this trying moments of lockdown by
1) providing food to teachers in private schools and PTA teachers in government school,
2) providing monetary support to teachers in private schools and PTA teachers in government school during this COVID 19 lockdown by supporting Directors of schools, to enable them to pay teachers' salaries for the months of February, March and half pay for the months from April, and
3) setting up of a standard minimum salary for teachers in private schools including payment of salaries during holidays. This is because teachers are never on holiday.
In some private schools ever since the start of term I 2020 on 03.02.2020 teachers have never received any salary, many of whom have accumulated loans to fund survival of their families. Teachers require urgent and immediate support.
Thank you.
Yours sincerely,
Amos Senyonjo. (0784256956)
