#Students' Rights
Target:
Ms. Jennifer Smith, 7th/8th Grade Social Studies Department, Lowe’s Grove Middle School.
Region:
United States of America

As a parent I, Ms. Sharif, fear the AVID Students academic success is in danger. I spoke with many other parents with the same concerns to a particular teacher and a particular course.

I advised all parents with the same concerns to meet with Mr. Eric Johnson; Principal at Lowe’s Grove Middle School, as soon as possible so he could look into this situation and decides what actions, if any, were necessary to remedy this.

This petition is an attempt to allow the students to voice their concerns in a way that will protect them from retaliation and ensure that their academic rights are protected.

The main issue is outlined here:

Methods of Social Research, a course that is of critical importance to Pre-College Academy and AVID, is being instructed by a single teacher. A teacher who would not be one that most students would have to take for such an important course considering there is a history of inconsistency with her teaching and grading habits.

Several students have voiced their opinions concerning these two habits and feel as if they are wholly unfair.

Students have had some difficult with assignments and passing the course. Many students find that Social Studies is challenging, and may fail to obtain a grade that is acceptable. In the case of most of the students a large amount of energy has been exerted learning the subject, and they have been diligent in completing assignments, and taking the exams, only to receive a grade that does not reflect our efforts at all.

Students main problem is that they give 110% in class, only to be told that it is not good enough. To make matters worse, they are not given any viable feedback as to how we can improve their grades. This instills in them a sense of imminent failure because it seems as if no matter how much students study or are confident in their knowledge, they will still fail to reach the Social Studies standards, mainly because they do not know what these standards are as they are ever-changing and contradictory.

We, the parents of the students in the Pre-College Academy and AVID at Lowe’s Grove Middle Shool, Durham NC, feel as though the current state of the Social Studies Department, particularly the manner in which the courses are taught, is in danger of infringing upon the students right to obtain the education that they have so generously to receive.

We feel as though these two problems could be remedied by one action on your part – and to offer students the option of being able to achieve their goal as a Pre-College Academy and AVID student.

The following signatures are legitimate and represent the feelings, opinions, and concerns of the body of Pre-College Academy and AVID here at Lowe’s Grove Middles School, Durham NC. We are fully confident that actions will be taken to remedy problems that have proven to be valid.

Thank you in advance for your time, consideration, and action.
