Through careful investment in 'Unit Trusts', which are tasked with the responsibility of managing the University's endowments, our University now holds shares in:
Arms Companies (BAE & GKN)
Tobacco (British American Tobacco, Imperial Tobacco)
'Big' Oil (Royal Dutch Shell, Tullow Oil, BP)
Pharmaceutical Companies (Glaxo, Pfizer)
According to research carried out by Campaign Against the Arms Trade, we had more that £180,000 worth of shares in BAE Systems and nearly £60,000 worth of shares in GKN in 2005. As the University will gladly attest to, we no longer hold direct shares in BAE, but instead hold them indirectly through 'Unit Trusts' managing our finances for us.
We are calling on the University to devise and implement an ethical investment policy which will ensure that the University invests only in companies which are consistent with the University's research and educational objectives.This is a successful model which has been implemented by Edinburgh and St. Andrews Universities.
The University must withdraw its investments from BAE Systems and GKN as well as introduce an open, transparent investment process in which there is student input into the University’s investment policy.
