"Police Officers" have long had the benefit of retiring after 20 years of service in New York State and have automatically been placed in a 20 year retirement system. However, New York State Sheriff's Deputies are not automatically placed in a 20 year retirement system. Most Deputies have to work at least half a decade longer than their "Police Officer" counterparts.

A County can opt to buy into a 20 year option for their Deputies, but the cost is usually prohibitive. Deputies attend the same training academies as "Police Officers" and perform the same duties, along with additional tasks that "Police Officers" do not necessarily perform. Often, the civil service exams for the "Police Officer" and Deputy Sheriff job titles are one and the same.

Deputies and their families share the same stresses, sacrifices, and risks as their "Police Officer" brethren. It is only fair that they are afforded the same benefits.

We, the undersigned support the notion of equal treatment for equal work. We are in favor of enacting legislation that would require Sheriff's Deputies to have the same retirement benefits as Police Officers.

We also feel that Sheriff's Deputies should be given equal credit for the New York State Public Employees Retirement System time that they have accrued as a Deputy Sheriff if they choose to laterally transfer into a "Police Officer" job title and thereby becoming enrolled into the New York State Police and Fire Retirement System with each year served as a Deputy Sheriff equalling and being credited as a year served as a "Police Officer".
