The National Sleep Foundation recommends that students obtain 8-10 hours of sleep every night. According to a survey issued to students in Howard County that received approximately 175 responses, roughly 10% of students sleep for the recommended amount of time each school night. Delaying school start times until after 8:00 am in order for students to obtain the amount of rest is necessary and has many benefits. For example, students will be able to focus more attentively instead of falling asleep in class, leading to higher test scores. A lesser amount of drowsy teens can also decrease automobile accidents. Finally, obtaining the correct amount of sleep can positively affect mental health by decreasing stress levels.

We, the undersigned, call on the Howard County Board of Education to delay school start times until 8:00 am for all students in order to improve students' well being.
