In Agadir region, we have many stray dogs, but we are also proud to host charities which operate a successful TNR (trap, neuter, release) program. TNR has been scientifically proven to be effective in reducing the number of strays and eliminating rabies. Recently, one of these charities processed their 1000th rescue. Due to the success of this program, this charity was able to negotiate an agreement with the state Governor to immediately stop the poisoning and shooting of strays.
However, over the last 2 nights, numerous dogs have been shot, often in front of many witnesses and social media is full of pictures. Why did the situation change?
Morocco has recently entered a bid to host the 2026 FIFA World Cup. To that end, FIFA's evaluation team will be visiting the country between the 16 and 19th of April. According to at least one newspaper this slaughter is designed to “clean up” the venues in advance of the visiting FIFA team.
We, the undersigned, call on FIFA to withdraw consideration of Morocco's 2026 football cup bid, unless the Moroccan Authorities immediately desist from shooting stray dogs in an effort to "clean up" before the FIFA Evaluation Team.
