The Konso, also known as hard-working people, are a Cushitic-speaking ethnic group primarily inhabiting south-central Ethiopia under the administration of the regional state of Southern Nations, Nationalities and Peoples Region (SNNPR). Konso is in trouble due to the request of constitutional self-determination. The Konso people have staged peaceful protests for more than 3 years now. Several members of the Konso community faced killings, mass arrests, releases, and re-arrests since June 2015.
Killings of innocent civilians are still continuing in Konso. Despite the fact that most political prisoners are released following the changes in the political situation in Ethiopia following Dr. Abiy Ahmad's coming to the premiership, in different parts of the country, the situation in Konso is yet to change for the better. People are still killed and arrested by SNNPRS special forces and local militia organized by the old TPLF led regional government officials. This week alone many innocent people of Konso are brutally beaten to death. The changes happening in the Ethiopian political climate need to be extended to SNNPRS, and to the Konso people in particular.
We, therefore, ask you to stand with the Konso people by signing this petition, to urge the prime minister of Ethiopia to give attention to the problem the Konso people currently facing from tyrant leaders who are seeking to rule people by force, not by the rule of law. Let us say "STOP KILLING INNOCENT PEOPLE IN KONSO!"
