9 out of 10 students do not even consider themselves to be hazed. This is because many students do not know the true definition of hazing and the variety of different organizations hazing can occur in.

Hazing can affect people in all organizations, from Greek life all the way to band and chorus groups, and can consist of a number of different activities from participating in drinking games to wearing embarrassing clothing.

We hope to clear up any misconceptions about the definition of hazing to help prevent students already in organizations from hazing their new members. Hazing does not provide a sense of accomplishment or increased self-esteem in new members; rather hazing can consist of many emotional and physical risks to individuals and the group as a whole.

You can help put an end to hazing today by signing this petition to help stop hazing on campus. Do you really want hazing to be your group’s tradition? We pledged not to haze, will you? Sign the pledge and print it out as a reminder that you made the promise to stop hazing in your organization.

I am signing this pledge as a commitment that I will stop hazing at the University of Maryland.

I will teach others the true definition of hazing, will report hazing when I see it occurring in my group, and will think of different bonding activities that my group can partake in besides hazing activities.
