Currently in British Columbia, a veterinarian is free to hire a high school student or anyone else to draw blood, anesthetize and take x-rays of your pet, among other tasks. There is no government legislation that requires an educated professional to perform prescribed medical procedures on your animals. Registered Veterinary Technologists are graduates of college/university programs accredited by the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association and are members of the BC Veterinary Technologists Association, which requires yearly continuing education to maintain good standing.
You wouldn't want just anyone anesthetizing your child; why should your pets be any different?
We, the undersigned pet owners of British Columbia, call on the College of Veterinarians of British Columbia to enact Bylaws that provides a scope of practice that is restricted to Registered Veterinary Technologists.
