Save Kiwanis Park! (Glenshaw, PA)

This petition is to ask the Shaler Area School District and Shaler Township to continue to utilize the former Jeffery Elementary school as an extension of Kiwanis Park (which is essential for community events) rather than converting it to apartment buildings.

Kiwanis Park is a staple of the Glenshaw/Shaler Area Community. The park is home to the township's public pool and has facilities including tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball fields, and picnic shelters. The park hosts numerous community events throughout the year including but not limited to 4th of July festival and fireworks, summer movie nights, Bike Rodeo (children's bicycle safety), Memorial Day Service, and Fall Fest.

Kiwanis park is located adjacent to the former Jeffery Elementary School which was closed in 2018. The school district had reached a verbal agreement with the Township to sell Shaler Township the property for $120,000. Shaler Township planned to use the property to expand and enhance Kiwanis Park for the benefit of the community. In December 2020, the school district changed directions and instead accepted an offer from ANG Real Estate for $499,000. ANG Real Estate plans to request a zoning change to build an apartment building on the property. This will severly limit the Townships ability to continue hosting community events for the public at Kiwanis Park because the sale will remove their access to the school's parking lot which was essential for family's to be able to attend the many events held at the park. The baseball field will also be included in the sale to ANG Real Estate.

This petition is requesting that the School District and Township consider what is in the Community's best interest and reject the re-zoning request and sell the property to the Township to enlarge Kiwanis Park. Selling the former Jeffery Elementary School to the Township will allow them to continue offering valuable community events and recreational access to enrich the lives of the citizens and children that reside within the area.
