Reports in the national media indicated that lions were dying from poisoning after eating hippo carcasses.

The cause of death of the hippos and other herbivores is a chemical found in some chemicals used to control plant diseases in the farms. The chemicals are washed out of the farms by run offs and contaminate the grass consumed by these animals. The farmers have noticed its effect and are now deliberately using the chemicals to target these animals with the claim that the herbivores are destroying their crops and the cats eating their animals.

We need to campaign for the ban on the use of these chemicals as they are robbing the country its fauna diversity, disturbing the environmental and natural balance and consequently killing the tourism industry which has been the largest forex earner for over a decade now. This puts many livelihoods at risk as jobs, business opportunities and other resources are indirectly affected.

We must urge the Kenya Govenment to find alternative chemicals and make it illegal to deal with these harmful chemicals for any purposes that have ramifications especially on our natural resources.

We, the undersigned, call on the Government of Kenya and other stakeholders to act quickly in stopping the use of harmful chemicals which kill wild animals in Kenya.
