Alfred Shailer Park is located in ‘The Sanctuary’ Estate nestled alongside the Daisy Hill Conservation Park. But because it is officially a recreational park, it is unprotected. Now the Logan City Council wants to develop this beautiful natural park with its wide-open spaces and seeks to put cement paths, metal structures, and other man-made items into this space.

However, the wallabies, kangaroos, plovers, ducks, galahs, cockatoos, and kookaburras don't seem to have any regard for what type of park it is, just that it is their feeding ground, their nest, their play area, their home. The animals rely and live on the wide expanses of grass, the trees and the shrubs, and the serenity that comes with being an undeveloped park.

The areas and activities within this park don’t have to be defined and dictated to the community. It can be a park that is open to choice. Keep the park as a natural, environmentally friendly park that is shared with the animals, where people can still go to play cricket, footy, fly a kite, run, and picnic.

Just because there is space to fill, doesn’t mean it has to be filled. In this hectic bustling world, how refreshing to have wide open spaces complete with animals roaming free. What a privilege and a delight.

There are two new parks that have recently been developed near ‘The Sanctuary’ (Parkway Park on Parkway Rd, and the huge Pioneer Park on the corner of Harley St and Shailer Rd, both within a 2km radius of the Estate) so we certainly don't need another such park with man-made things and concrete and metal which will drive away the native animals from their home.

With developed parks comes the associated problems of offending behaviours and concerning acts such as alcohol and drug use, graffiti and loitering. Sand as a base has been proven to be hazardous with hidden broken glass and syringes. As crime increases in an area, the value of the properties in that area decreases.

Councilor Lisa Bradley from Division 1, Logan City Council, says that she is speaking for the community and that the majority of residents in ‘The Sanctuary’ want the park to be developed. We are asking that the residents speak for the wildlife and native fauna and flora, and sign this petition to save Alfred Shailer Park from development.

Let’s do the right thing. Let’s make Alfred Shailer Park a park dedicated to natural simple activities that families can choose for themselves what they want to do in the wonderful space this park offers. Let's keep this park a space where families can still go to play cricket together, have a game of footy or fly a kite. But most importantly, let's preserve this park that the abundance of native wildlife have made their home.

We the undersigned call on the Logan City Council to save Alfred Shailer Park from development or the installation of any man-made items such as metal and cement structures, cement paths, and sand-pits which will drive the animals out of this park.

Prevent the attraction of offending behaviours and concerning acts which will bring down the value of properties within the estate. Allow the community to utilise the wide-open spaces of the park for activities of their choice. Preserve the natural wildlife that have made this park their home.
