Gun violence in the United States is an epidemic. All across the country, people are being killed daily. In Minnesota, this is no different. Data from the state Department of Health showed that in 2016, in Minnesota alone, a gun killed more than one person per day. This number balloons to nearly one hundred deaths per day when we look at the United States as a whole.
Gun violence is preventable and it is our duty as citizens to act. Students have already demonstrated in large numbers to show that they will no longer permit this senseless violence and inaction.
A bill written by high school students, with the intent of curbing gun violence, is now being presented to the Minnesota State Legislature. This bill will require universal background checks, requiring that gun sales go through a federally licensed dealer. We ask for your support as we engage in discussion with our politicians and work to make Minnesota safer for us all.
We, the undersigned, call on the Minnesota State Legislature to pass into law a student written bill that will require universal background checks on gun sales.
