“The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (CDCR) recently boasted about the use of prison labor for firefighting on Twitter: “Today, more than 2,000 volunteer inmate firefighters, including 58 youth offenders, are battling wildfire flames throughout CA. Inmate firefighters serve a vital role, clearing thick brush down to bare soil to stop the fire’s spread.” “The inmate firefighters make $1 an hour plus $2 a day.”

Inmates in California are putting out fires for $1 an hour. Please help us raise that wage to $3 an hour. Inmates have to pay full price for commissary, $1/h is not enough to pay for shampoo, toothpaste, toilet paper, and other necessities. The inmates helping with the fire are not only risking their lives, but non-serious offenders. There are certain rules to being a firefighter in prison in California, having a life long or serious crime conviction means you cannot join. Please help these people, that may be out soon, earn enough for basic needs. We need California to hear us and help those that are helping us.
