I am starting this petition to stand up for students rights.

The students at Riverchase Middle School, and other places in Shelby County, Alabama, have been wanting to color their hair in ways that are against the Shelby County dress code.

Some students have already colored their hair, and have been punshied for doing so, or are going to be punished for doing so.

Teachers have not been bothered by this and it has not disrupted the educational process, as far as I am concerned. Accually, some teachers have said that it is our decision to do what we want with our hair.

I completely agree. It is our rights, as Americans and studentds of Shelby County, to style and/or color our hair as we please. As long as it does not disrupt the learning process.

It is clearly stated in the "Shelby County Board of Education Student Code of Conduct and Attendance for Middle and High School:2006-2007" on page 12, letter K, "Earrings, hair styles, and other adornments that draw attention to oneself in a manner that may be disruptive to the educational process are prohibited."

These hair styles are NOT disruptive to the educational process according to teachers and students.

We, students, think that we should be able to style and/or color our hair any way we please. As long as it is agreed that it is not disruptive to the learning process by teachers, students, and staff of the school.

We, the students of Shelby County, call on the Shelby County Board of Education to permit the coloring, etc., of hair, as long as agreed by students, teachers, and staff, that it is not disruptive to the education process.
