Cobb EMC's Board of Directors voted to cut its ties to the ill-conceived Plant Washington and Plant Ben Hill coal-fired power plants on January 24. The projects were the product of a partnership called Power4Georgians created by indicted former CEO Dwight Brown.
The 200,000 member Cobb EMC was the lead financier of POWER4Georgians, but now EMC members from four smaller Georgia cooperatives- including Washington EMC- are on the hook for the $4 billion dollar coal plant projects.
Proceeding with these dirty coal plans will threaten Georgia communities with toxic pollution like mercury and fine particulate matter. WEMC owner members' run the risk of sharply increased electricity rates; Plant Washington would raise cooperative member rates by 10-20% (an average of $200 a year!) in the first year of operation alone!

Cobb EMC, the founder and largest financial backer of POWER4Georgians, has cut its financial ties to the company and its plans to build two coal-fired power plants in Georgia.
WEMC owner members, along with the 3 remaining co-ops, now know that Power4Georgians has failed to provide any evidence showing the need for or the financial benefits of developing these dirty coal plants.
WEMC hasn't even set a 2012 budget for this boondoggle project, so the time to stop spending our money on this project is now!
We know Plant Washington will put WEMC members and Washington County taxpayers at great financial risk. Plant Washington threatens our community with toxic pollution like mercury, fine particulate matter, and a 400 acre landfill filled with heavy metals directly above our groundwater and nearby Williamson Swamp Creek.
The time is now. NOT ANOTHER DOLLAR ON PLANT WASHINGTON!
