The 4017 community had success in objecting to a McDonald's store, as proposed for the corner of Board and Kift Streets in Deagon, in 2011. Brisbane City Council did not support the application and McDonalds withdrew their proposal.

Within twelve months of the aforementioned community success, it is rumoured that McDonalds have purchased 69 Rainbow Street, and plan for a McDonald's store in the heart of Sandgate. The site is within 100 metres of the local school, within walking distance of independently owned burger shops, and community housing flats. The nearest McDonald's store to Sandgate is only seven minutes drive to Bracken Ridge.

This community has clearly said no to the McDonalds fast food corporation. Sign this petition and help our community keep McDonalds out of Sandgate.

To: The Right Honourable, the Lord Mayor of Brisbane, and Members of the Brisbane City Council of Queensland.

The petition of residents of the State of Queensland draws to the attention of the Brisbane City Council that McDonalds Australia is planning a McDonald’s store at 69 Rainbow Street, Sandgate.

We, the undersigned, object on the grounds that if the development went ahead, it would not fit the character of the area, result in significant increases in the levels of litter and crime, early morning and late night noise, and traffic problems in the local area.

We, the undersigned object with concern for children at Sandgate State School, as “proximity to a fast food restaurant is associated with increases in obesity rates and weight gains” (Currie, DellaVigna, Moretti, Pathania, 2009:3).

We the undersigned, your petitioners, therefore request the Brisbane City Council reject a McDonald’s store in Sandgate.
