The proposal to build on Babbacombe Downs is a deeply flawed one: local opinion is overwhelmingly against it, and the local community were not consulted in the correct manner over it.
No public space should ever be developed without local consultation, but to propose commercial development on a site of outstanding natural beauty which is protected by a covenant and is in an area of limited access is absolutely crazy. In pursuing this policy in the face of such opposition the Mayor and his cabinet are acting most undemocratically.
The Cary Estate must, therefore, give the people the representation which has been denied them by the Mayor and stop any further discussion of this development.
We, the undersigned, call upon the trustees of the Cary Estate to uphold the covenant on Babbacombe Downs and prevent any commercial development there.
