Alex Trebek has hosted Jeopardy! for more than 35 years, and we appreciate his years of service. But when Jeopardy! needs a new host, we would like to suggest: Please consider LeVar Burton!
LeVar posted on his Facebook page: "Not gonna lie, I feel like I’ve been preparing my whole life to occupy the @Jeopardy host podium when Alex retires." We agree, he'd be a natural! Imagine all of those people who watched "Reading Rainbow" as kids following him right to the most respected game show in the history of television.
And Jeopardy! needs to think about taking a leadership role in modeling more diverse access to curiosity, general knowledge, and intellectual achievement, especially at this time in our history. We know that "it's just a game"--but Jeopardy! is viewed in popular culture as a showcase for informed, intelligent people.
We hope that the producers of Jeopardy! will take the long view and bring on a host that will not only be poised, engaging, and effortlessly capable, but will also model that it's not only white men who can embody all of those qualities. (And, c'mon--who wouldn't love to listen to that voice, and that laugh, every evening?) Please consider bringing LeVar Burton to the podium!
