Horses in the United States should not be slaughtered for food. Although people want ways of disposing of dangerous, unsafe horses, most of the animals that wound up at the slaughter plants pre-2007 were suitable for different disciplines.

Humane euthanasia is not equivalent to slaughter. The horse community is not asking the government to support unwanted or unused horses; instead the horse community is asking its own members to take care of the horses they already have, stop irresponsible breeding; and humanely destroy horses that are unsafe or can no longer be cared for.

Also, many products used in caring for horses are clearly labeled "Not for use in horses intended for food." Currently, there is no safe way to determine which horses have been exposed to these products. Reopening the slaughter plants could, therefore, put public health at risk.

We, the undersigned, call on the United States to keep the horse slaughtering plants and industry closed, and to enforce the animal cruelty laws already on the books.
