In 1997, an amendment was made to the Dangerous Dogs Act, after years of pressure from campaigners and welfare groups, to stop the killing of certain 'illegal' breeds, known as the 'Breed Specific Legislation'. Even this does not stop the killings of these dogs, as it is very difficult to prove whether a dog has in fact 'committed an offence' in a court of law.

Years have passed, and still this legislation remains, in Gibraltar, when few, if any, of these 'certain types of pit bulls', have acted angrily or committed an offence under this act. It is time for this legislation to be looked into and amended, to allow the importation of these types of breeds.

We believe that dogs, irrelevant of breed, are not to blame, only owners who do not understand or care are responsible for their actions.

We, the undersigned Gibraltar Dog Lovers, call upon government and or related departments, to ammend this legislation, and or, give reason for this law still being legislated within our jurisdiction.

We call upon the government, and or, related departments to allow the importation of these types of dogs, named in the Breed Specific Legislation, currently illegal and noted as 'extremely dangerous', in our Animal Loving Community.

The Gibraltar Dog Lovers Against Breed Specific Legislation petition to Government was written by KBgib and is in the category Law Reform at GoPetition.
