Rising gasoline sales taxes are not fair!!!!

Just like groceries, we need gasoline; it’s a basic necessity not a luxury! It makes no sense that gasoline costs twice as much as two years ago. It also makes no sense that the local sales tax on gasoline is twice as much as two years ago. In Erie County our sales tax on gasoline and diesel fuel is the highest of any county in New York State.

The State of New York allows counties to cap their sales tax on motor fuels at a rate equal to $2.00 a gallon. If Erie County did this it would mean that we would pay 9.5 cents a gallon in local taxes like we did two years ago. Today at over $4.00 per gallon we are paying more than 18 cents per gallon in local taxes. While at over $5.00 per gallon for diesel, businesses with trucks are paying more than 22 cents per gallon in local taxes.

The extra sales tax being collected by Erie County because of the record high prices on motor fuels is a 20 million dollar windfall. This surplus tax revenue needs to be returned to the taxpayers with lower prices at the pump. If the Erie County sales tax on motor fuel was capped at 9.5 cents a gallon it would reduce prices at the pump by almost 10 cents a gallon in Erie County, and that’s only fair!

We the undersigned call on the Erie County Legislature to follow the States lead and cap the local sales tax at the $2.00 per gallon rate of 9.5 cents per gallon.

The rising gasoline sales tax is gouging Erie County Residents and businesses at the pump. These tax increases need to stop!!
