Express bus commuters in the outer boroughs generally live in transportation deserts, in two-fare zones (prior to the Metrocard), and face some of the longest commutes not only in New York City, but in the nation. Despite the lack of transportation options for thousands of outer borough residents, there has been NO subway expansion outside of Manhattan in DECADES, and there is none planned. Express bus commuters are the ONLY commuter group in New York City that does not have a monthly commuter pass. We have a weekly pass, but it tends to be more expensive than the monthly counterpart. The monthly express bus option was discontinued by the MTA years ago, as was the senior discount during peak periods, and the student discount on MTA Bus express buses, with no reasonable explanations given to justify such adverse changes. The aforementioned actions unfairly punishes those of us in transportation deserts, and thus we are seeking affordable and reliable service just like New Yorkers who have subway access in their communities.
We, the undersigned, are requesting the following:
1. That the MTA reinstate our monthly express bus commuter pass that it discontinued years ago so that we have affordable commutes like all other New Yorkers;
2. That the MTA reinstate the senior discount on express buses at ALL times, not just during off-peak periods. Senior citizens should not be penalized to pay the full fare to go to important doctor's appointments and the like;
3. That the MTA reinstate the student discount on express buses at ALL times. Students that live in transportation deserts should not be penalized and forced into longer commutes to pursue their education because of the high fares on the express bus.
All of the aforementioned actions are discriminatory against those of us in transportation deserts, and they must end.
