In recent years, there has been growing international recognition of the mental, physical, and emotional benefits associated with naturism and clothing-optional recreation. As the founder of NaturismRE & Naturis Sancta and an advocate for respectful naturism, I am calling on the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to support a forward-thinking initiative: the designation of clothing-optional hiking trails in select national parks across New South Wales. This proposal draws on the successful model established in Germany, where clothing-optional trails have flourished for over a decade without conflict. With the closure of Werrong Beach and the lack of legal spaces for naturists in NSW, it is time to offer safe, clearly marked trails in semi-remote or remote areas. These trails would empower individuals to reconnect with nature, promote body acceptance, and enhance Australia’s eco-tourism appeal. With appropriate signage, community guidelines, and strong environmental safeguards, this initiative has the potential to lead the nation in inclusivity, wellness, and responsible outdoor recreation.
Petition for Clothing-Optional Hiking Trails in NSW National Parks
To the New South Wales National Parks and Wildlife Service,
We, the undersigned, respectfully petition for the establishment of designated clothing-optional hiking trails in selected national parks across New South Wales. This proposal seeks to create safe, clearly defined trails in semi-remote or remote areas where visitors may engage in nude hiking respectfully and lawfully.
Why This Matters:
1. Mental and Physical Wellness:
Naturism has been shown to reduce stress, improve self-esteem, and foster a deeper sense of connection with nature. Nude hiking enhances these effects, offering an unencumbered, holistic experience that promotes personal wellbeing.
2. Body Positivity and Inclusivity:
Providing designated spaces affirms body diversity and allows people to feel comfortable and accepted. Clothing-optional trails would serve as a sanctuary for those seeking liberation from social judgement and a return to natural living.
3. Environmental and Social Responsibility:
With clear signage, community-developed conduct guidelines, and trail placement in less-frequented areas, we can ensure minimal disruption to other visitors and protect the natural environment. Educational signage can guide behaviour and environmental respect.
4. Economic and Eco-Tourism Potential:
Australia is well-positioned to become a global leader in naturist-friendly tourism. With billions generated globally by naturist tourism, NSW has an opportunity to attract respectful, low-impact travellers from around the world while supporting local communities.
5. Proven International Success:
Germany has successfully operated clothing-optional hiking trails in national parks for over a decade without incident. These models demonstrate that such trails can coexist with broader public use when implemented with care and community consultation.
Implementation Framework:
Location: Trails would be located in semi-remote or remote sections of selected national parks to minimise overlap with high-traffic zones.
Signage: Entry points would feature clearly visible signage to inform users of the clothing-optional status of the trail.
Conduct Guidelines: NaturismRE & Naturis Sancta are committed to developing a clear, respectful Code of Conduct in consultation with stakeholders, promoting responsible and lawful behaviour.
Environmental Care: Access paths, information boards, and community volunteers can help protect biodiversity, reduce erosion, and maintain trail quality.
Community Involvement: Naturist groups, local businesses, and tourism stakeholders will be engaged in the stewardship and promotion of these spaces.
Legal Context and Support:
Although Section 633 of the NSW Local Government Act 1993 applies to local councils, it provides precedent for the formal regulation of clothing-optional areas in public spaces. We urge NPWS to explore similar provisions within its framework for managing public land, recognising the potential for low-impact use, public benefit, and community support.
NaturismRE & Naturis Sancta are prepared to co-fund signage and produce educational materials to support this initiative, reducing any burden on the department. This pilot initiative could place NSW at the forefront of a growing international movement that balances freedom, inclusion, and environmental care.
Conclusion:
We believe the time is right for NSW to take a progressive and respectful step forward in nature-based recreation. Establishing clothing-optional trails will set a positive national precedent, offering safe and inclusive spaces for those who seek to enjoy nature on a deeper level.
With this petition, we call on the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to explore the feasibility of launching a pilot program, and to begin consultation with community groups and stakeholders to bring this proposal to life.
Respectfully,
Vincent Marty
