The purpose of the Electoral College is to act like the protective older brother of American democracy. The system withholds its legitimacy until the votes from the electoral college go against the citizens’ choice of the President-Elect. As mentioned by this quote, “16 of the past 35 presidential elections exhibited a popular vote percent margin less than 5 percent,” the 5 percent in this quote represents how close the candidate the people wanted was almost cheated a win because of a thin margin of votes (Prabhushankar). The drawback with such close races comes from the way candidates have to run in these elections.
We, the undersigned call on the United States to eliminate the Electoral College.
