The Ministry of Education
Region:
Jamaica

If the educational system of Jamaica were to be summed up in one sentence, it would be that it is in utter distress. Education is rather expensive for some in this country. The thought of "free education" was brought about by former Prime Minister, Mr.Bruce Golding, in 2007, but is that really so?. The fees to be removed were only for high school students, but what about about the youths who want to go further than secondary education level? Those who can not pay for a proper education are not address/dealt with properly.

It is said that “every child can learn and every child must learn” and that “education is free”, but is that really so? Who is education free for? And who are those children that are able to learn?
I strongly disagree with those saying, in my eyes, education is only “free” and granted for those who have the funds for it. How is it that a child cannot sit examinations if his/her tuition is not paid? Then we as a nation wonder why there are so many under qualified individuals roaming about. Not saying that they should go through school without paying a cent but at least grant them access to the examination and then hold on to the results if they don’t pay the fees. Knowledge is a key all man should have, why should one a child be denied the ability to be great.
This petition is against the act for disallowing students not to sit examinations if they do not/ can not pay their fees on time. At least 65% of Jamaica’s population consist of those who are under privileged and can not afford the things in this economy. This act is deterring youths, especially those who are not privileged, that are trying to make better of themselves; it is deterring them from earning a little income to support them and their families. Some of the greatest minds comes from those who can not afford to show how great they are; the country is failing because they are not given the chance to excel. We are disappointed and frustrated at the continued lack of commitment to ensure that the people with less benefits have access to proper resource and inclusive education. I ask that the government will take inconsideration these type of individuals.
I thank you and look forward to a brighter future for the generation of Jamaica.

Your Sincerely
Ms. Haughton
