On Saturday, November 7, 2009, Congressman Murphy, along with 219 of his colleagues voted to pass H.R. 3962, the House Bill for Healthcare reform.

It is apparent that Congressman Murphy is not listening to his constituents and our opposition to this illfounded bill.

1) The reported price tag is 1.2 trillion dollars over 10 years, and that's a low figure. If the bill is approved, an additional $250 billion is planned to be added for the "doc fix" (a restoration of proposed cuts in Medicare payments to doctors), bringing the total to $1.45 trillion dollars.

2) Passage of the bill will lead to the creation of about 111 new government bureaucracies.

3) In September, Nancy Pelosi declared that she was "absolutely" committed to leaving the House bill up online for 72 hours before a vote. The bill was unavailable for review with less than 24 hours to go prior to the vote. How can anyone digest such a complex issue and understand its nuances in this short timeframe. It is incomprehensible how our representatives are prepared to make such enormous decisions.

4) The CBO scoring of this bill underestimates its true cost. CBO cost estimates are based on a 10 year window; the bill is constructed to recognize revenues immediately, but defer costs for as many as 4 years after the bill's passage.

Congressman Murphy:

YOU ARE NOT LISTENING TO US!

We the undersigned, as citizens of the United States, residing in the 5th Congressional District of Connecticut, petition you, as our Representative, to hear our pleas to be more attuned to your constituents wishes.

How could you, when we have made a concerted effort to inform you of our wishes on this matter, vote for this ill conceived, tragically expensive, power grabbing bill.

What exactly is in this bill that you voted for, without having it available to review 24 hours before your vote, are you sure it is right for us?

We can’t afford to pay this bill’s estimated in (today’s dollars) 1.45 trillion dollar pricetag

We don’t need any more governmental bureaucracies that we can’t afford.

We want the right to select our own doctors and the health care plan that best suits our own and our family's needs, without government coercion or unsustainable costs.

We support reform that will expand real choices for us, based on free-market principles.

We want you to clearly understand that your responsibility is to your constituents (Democrats, Republicans, and Independents) and not to Nancy Pelosi.

We want you to stand with the people who hired you and not with the House Democratic leadership. We want you to REPRESENT us!

We need to remind you that the residents of the 5th Congressional District hired you and, therefore, can FIRE you.

As this debate goes forward, we petition you to join us in opposition to the lack of accountability that this bill furthers, the fiscal irresponsibility that it represents and the lack of choice and increase in costs that it will saddle us with.
