Competency tests evaluate theoretical and applied knowledge. These types of exams should be used to determine which students need general education courses and which do not. This would ensure that every student is completely educated while not punishing students who are advanced. College is expensive, maximizing one's time is key. Today's college students literally cannot afford to waste time retaking classes. The goal of this petition is to gain support and to exert pressure onto public Wisconsin universities to implement competency exams rather than forcing students to take classes they may not need.

We, the signers of this petition, call on the Wisconsin University public education system to implement competency examinations to evaluate which students would benefit from general education courses and which do not. We demand our public universities respect students, time, money and knowledge; while utilizing the best educational models available to give our students the opportunities they deserve.
