Disinformation campaigns of foreign actors have become widespread on social media, They lead to negative effects on the health (COVID misinformation) as well as political manipulation and spread of harmful & misleading information.
In the light of the content volume Facebook (Meta) fact-checkers that rely on checking flagged and reported posts are not effective as they only check the content that is reported and only successfully act on 5% of reported misinformation and accounts (Center for Countering Digital Hate).
To address this issue, the petition proposes a different approach, We propose for verified media outlets that have a large outreach and impact, to have a paid opt-in opt-out option to receive news verification services.
Under this option, news media outlets will be able to choose Facebook Verified fact-checking services that mark fact-checked information with a green checkmark. As a result, people will be able to clearly see that content has been fact-checked.
We understand that this requires large human resources and that it might not be cost-efficient for Facebook, this is why we suggest the service be a paid opt-in option. This way, Facebook won't increase operational costs and users can see whether the content is verified, and large platforms will be held accountable.
We request Facebook (Meta) to add an additional opt-in service for media outlets to go through content fact-checking/verification, and for the fact-checked content to have a green (any distinctive color) checkmark.
We understand that this service would best work as an opt-in, so media outlets can choose to pay for the content fact-checking services by Facebook verified fact-checkers and in return, users would be easily able to make a distinction between misleading and informative content from large outlets (via checkmark).
As Facebook is against censorship, we would like to make it known that as this service is an opt-in, and does not facilitate the removal of any content, or limit distribution, it is not limiting free speech and we as users welcome it.
