On Monday, July 21st 2014, the varsity cheer squad from Grandview High School received information that a coach would not be coming back this season because of a picture she took of the varsity squad at cheer camp in June, 2014.

This coach opened the cheerleading program 16 years ago and has coached for a total of 22 years. She has led the program to 3 state champion rings, 7 league victories, and 8 National Finalist titles. She also received Coach of the Year in 2011 from the Colorado Spirit Coaches Association. Her traditions and techniques have made Grandview Cheer one of the most successful programs in the state. She has made cheerleading and her team a priority in her life since she started coaching. Her legacy has changed the spirit and heart at Grandview High School, as well. She has worked to make the Grandview student body more lively at games for maximum support of the basketball programs, football, volleyball, etc. Most importantly, she created the Spirit Squad. This is a team of competition cheerleaders and special needs kids from Grandview’s ILC program.

Spirit Squad cheers on the sidelines at games, performs in front of the school, and has even been on 9 news, all thanks to this coach. This program has changed the life of the ILC kids by involvement. Cheerleaders invite them bowling or to a movie, stand together in the hallway, go to each other’s birthday parties, and truly have lifelong friendships with the Spirit Squad athletes. She deserves her job back because she was not in the wrong for taking the picture.

The same content in that photo has been in the Grandview yearbook every year and has been on students' social media accounts in Colorado and nationwide. This picture was misunderstood when it was all for school spirit at cheer camp.

Campaign organizers: Hallie Greene, Amanda Weakley, Christy Saponas, and Meagan Johnson on behalf of the Grandview cheerleaders.

We, the undersigned, call on Cherry Creek School District to reinstate Marcia Hoerl as the cheerleading director at Grandview High School. The picture was a symbol of school spirit only. It was not taken to be offensive in any way.

She deserves her job back because she is not in the wrong. The same poses from Coach Hoerl's picture of the varsity cheer squad have appeared in the Grandview yearbook year after year and in numerous pictures from other teams and students nationwide.
