Under UK law, all farmed animals have to be stunned to render them unconscious before their throats are cut. However, a special legal exemption means that animals slaughtered, “by a religious method” - i.e. for halal or kosher meat - are exempt.

These animals suffer prolonged and cruel deaths, after their throat is cut they are then hoisted up on hooks whilst still fully concious until they bleed to death. Large animals can take up to 10 minutes to die.

Govt. site to repeal the exemption of religious slaughter:

PLEASE NOTE WE WILL SOON BE SENDING THIS PETITION TO THE HOUSE OF COMMONS TO LET THEM KNOW THEY ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO DO NOT LIKE TO BE FED THIS SLAUGHTERED MEAT. PLEASE PASS THIS PETITION AROUND SO WE CAN HAVE A LARGE BOOST TO SIGNATURES. MANY THANKS.

We the undersigned call for the British Government to ban Religious slaughter in the UK. We feel that in the UK, successive governments have failed to take the views of the majority into account on this and other issues for some considerable time.

Further our government(s), in collusion with EU bureaucrats, have downplayed much of the horror of Halal and Kosher slaughter - giving unfair competitive advantages to those groups - and, in the process, riding roughshod over the human and consumer rights of the majority. Because of inaccurate, misleading information and downright obfuscation in labelling in the UK most consumers have no idea at all of where their meat (and by-products) comes from, that they are very often the product of extreme cruelty to animals.

We appreciate peoples religions and we wish to stress we are not picking on minorities, our concern is for the welfare of our animals.
