Slaughter without stunning is an excruciating and terrifying experience faced by millions of animals every year.
All food livestock in Britain are killed by having their throats cut, but the law requires that they are first rendered unconscious by stunning. However, animals killed for Muslim Halal meat are exempt from this law - they can be slaughtered by throat-cutting WITHOUT pre-stunning, even though it does not say anywhere in the Qur'an that an animal cannot be unconscious before it is killed.
After having their throats cut, animals are hung by one leg, still alive, and allowed to slowly bleed to death. According to research, it can take a cow 60 seconds - an entire minute - to lose consciousness, and a calf twice this time.
Approximately 8 million animals per year are slaughtered this way for the Halal market.
In 2003, the Farm Animal Welfare Council published its report on the welfare of animals at slaughter - it recommended that a solid law should be passed to stun all animals before slaughter. In 2004, the Government accepted FAWC’s conclusion that animals slaughtered without pre-stunning are likely to experience “very significant pain and distress”, but announced that it would not adopt the report’s recommendation.
Halal meat is often not labeled as such in UK supermarkets, so many of us are unwittingly supporting this cruel, barbaric and unnecessary method of slaughter.

The killing of animals is a shame but as the slaughter of animals is necessary to feed the many millions of meat eaters living in Great Britain it is vital that these animals are slaughtered in the most humane (Painless) way possible.
In a FSA approved slaughter house all animals are stunned prior to slaughter so the animal feels no pain or suffering at all.
But in a FSA exempt slaughter houses I.e Halal slaughter houses animal are not stunned prior to slaughter. Slaughter is carried out with a single cut to the throat, rather than the more widespread method of stunning with a bolt into the head before slaughter. Under Islamic law, an animal must be slaughtered by having its throat cut while it is conscious. The person carrying out the killing has to recite an Arabic verse at the time. Campaign group the Christian Institute, said: ‘The idea of having Islamic ritual said over meat would be objectionable to some Christians. I would find it objectionable, so it should be labelled as Halal.’
The Farm Animal Welfare Council (FAWC), which advises the government on how to avoid cruelty to livestock, says the way Halal meat is produced causes severe suffering to animals. They say “cattle can take up to two minutes to bleed to death - amounting to severe pain and distress to the animals”.
The RSPCA believes that religious beliefs and practise should be respected but also believe that animals should only be slaughtered under the most humane conditions.
Halal food is everywhere. According to recent news reports, it is being "secretly" snuck into your sandwich or fed to your child in their school dinner. It's also found in hospital canteens, pubs, sporting venues and most fast food out lets.
Britain's biggest supermarket chains are selling Halal lamb and chicken without telling unsuspecting shoppers. Those stocking meat slaughtered according to Islamic law include Waitrose, Marks & Spencer, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Somerfield and the Co-op. But the UK’s second-biggest supermarket, Asda, has refused to confirm or deny whether it sells Halal meat.
Most lamb imported from New Zealand by British supermarkets has been slaughtered according to Islamic law, but this is not mentioned on packaging. Some lamb from British abattoirs is also Halal.
The country’s biggest hotel and restaurant group, Whitbread– which owns the Beefeater and Brewers Fayre chains – was also selling Halal food, as were well-known sporting venues such as Ascot, Twicken¬ham and Wembley.
The Jewish faith have a similar slaughter method call Shechita but there are no Shechita slaughter houses in the UK. Members of the Jewish faith respect our laws and import their own Shechita meat to be sold only in registered Jewish supermarkets.
Why is it that a blind eye is being turned to the Halal labelling of food? Because it is politically correct not to say anything about it incase it offends the Islamic community within Britain?
Sorry but that is wrong. Halal products and outlets must be labelled so that the general public can have a choice. Why force it upon people. Why can it not be treated the same as Shechita meat! Well labelled and sold only in Jewish shops! If followers of Islam want Halal meat why can they not do the same as Members of the Jewish faith?

Re: Labelling - Legally we should surely be protected by 'The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008' under Part 2, Section 6 'Misleading omissions'.
The majority of UK Consumers do not need costly Official Certification on products eg.Halal or Kosher Certification, because they are not interested in a products authenticity - they just want to know in plain English if products have any religious association and this can be clear with a simple 'RS' Label.
The Over-Production of Ritually Slaughtered meat in the UK must STOP.... the majority of the population do not follow religious dietary laws and just require normal meat. It seems that Halal over-production was allowed to meet increased demand, but that demand is false, as it only happened, because we have all been unwittingly buying & eating UNLABELLED HALAL for more than 10 years... even in the House of Commons!
UK Statutory Instrument 1995 No. 731
The Welfare of Animals (Slaughter or Killing) Regulations 1995, SCHEDULE 12 Regulations 21 and 22 ADDITIONAL PROVISIONS FOR SLAUGHTER BY A RELIGIOUS METHOD specifies that meat is slaughtered by a muslim - for the food of muslims (or by a jew - for the food of jews).
No where does it state that the religious exemption can be used to slaughter for the mass market.
This slaughter method is a backward step when we consider animal welfare (even with Low-Stun!) and this amount of halal production certainly seems to step outside of the Law!
Why is the government allowing over-production of 7th Century Ritually Slaughtered Halal meat in quantities that far exceed the needs of the muslim minority in 21st Century Britain? 95% of the UK population are NOT muslim and these consumers are not interested in any kind of Religious Regulation or Certification in the name of allah or anyone else.
British Consumers need a simple an 'RS' Label suitable for All Religious Slaughtered meat & its bi-products no matter how it is stunned or what its source is.
ARTICLE 9 HUMAN RIGHTS ACT: Freedom of Conscience - gives us the right to religious and secular freedom, ie to not be forced to participate in religious rites. Dedicating this meat to a foreign god violates this right: What we have now in Britain is forced participation in another's religion without consent. Christians, Sikhs & Hindus are specifically instructed not to eat this meat...
We need to bypass these arguments about stunning: Low-Stun, Post-Stun, No Stun, because we Non-Muslims don't need to know if eg.something is suitable to be certified halal or not... that is a matter for muslims to agree on; However notably the only muslim organisation in the UK which claims to allow 'stunning' is the Halal Food Authority [HFA]. The only form of 'stunning' they permit as part of their strict criteria is a method known as "Ultra-low-amperage-stun" or "Stun to immobilise", and the levels of current used in this method is way, way, below that recommended by the European Food Safety Authority and DEFRA to ensure an animal is fully insensible to suffering and pain at point of killing.
The HFA admit themselves that the 'stun' they support is useless, in their slaughter policy they state:
"2. The animal must not be anaesthetised, stunned to be killed or otherwise rendered wholly insensible prior to slaughter. It must be conscious and alive when it is slaughtered."
RS' can also stand for 'Religious Standard' and could therefore be used on ALL Products that come under any Religious Standard eg. Halal Products & Services including Meat manufacturing, processing & packaging; abattoirs and butchers for Halal slaughtering techniques and procedures, Pharmaceutical Industries & Financial products; Cosmetics, toiletries, personal care, etc.; Imported Products; Eating establishments, Restaurants, fast food chains, canteens and other food outlets.
Anywhere & anything associated with Ritual Slaughter or a Religious Standard needs labelling 'RS' so we fully understand what we are choosing to buy & eat.
Simple 'RS' labelling can be used on both Halal & Kosher products - solely for the benefit of British consumers & their Right to choose. We want profits to go back into the British economy; not for example, as with halal products, to be channelled towards Islamic ends.
We appeal to those in power to authorise the writing of a suitable policy that will make Labelling ALL Religiously Slaughtered meat a Legal Requirement by Law, so that we all know what we are buying & eating.
This needs to happen both in the UK and the EU.
Consumers need to be able to identify whether they are buying or eating normal meat or RS meat, normal products or RS products.
We fear that if we don't do something NOW, we may find that normal meat will be under-produced and soon become very expensive... which would then force non-muslims to have to buy halal with no alternative.
Please make recommendations to label all 'RS' Products by Law to protect the right of the majority of UK Consumers to be able to have a real choice when they make a purchasing decision of what they use, buy or eat.
The cruel inhumane way that animals are slaughtered by Muslims in the name of 'Faith' must be stopped. There is no need for this barbarity to happen.
The obligatory stunning of animals has been a law in this Country for many years.

En France, et d'ailleurs egalement au sein de toute la communaute europeenne, l'etourdissement prealable des animaux de ferme de l'ordre des artiodactyles ( bovins, ovins, caprins et porcins ) avant leur mise a mort est obligatoire d'apres la legislation. Il existe cependant une derogation permettant de s'y soustraire lorsque l'abattage rituel est requis afin de satisfaire les exigences de certains cultes religieux.
Neanmoins, la loi n'ayant pris aucune disposition afin que ce mode d'abattage soit reserve exclusivement au benefice des communautes religieuses auxquelles il est voue, l'exception prend progressivement le pas sur la regle et une part croissante bientot majoritaire d'animaux sont inutilement mis a mort suivant ce mode et consommes par toute la population sans que celle-ci en soit informee.
L'obligation d'etourdir les animaux avant leur execution repond a des normes de protection animale visant à reduire l'indicible douleur physique et l'enorme traumatisme psychique que constituent la perte de la vie par egorgement, utilise dans leur cas. Lors des abattages rituels, ces souffrances ne leur sont pas epargnees, car les animaux sont maintenus en etat de conscience pendant la decoupe de leur gorge et l'agonie qui s'ensuit. On a enregistre des cas de bovins restant conscients jusqu'à 14 minutes apres le debut de la saignee.
Afin de limiter le nombre d'animaux condamnes à endurer ces affres et de ramener les pratiques a un plus strict respect de la loi et aussi de la liberte de choix des consommateurs, des propositions de loi ont ete faites dans chacune des chambres parlementaires de la republique francaise afin de permettre une reelle gestion des quotas d'animaux abattus rituellement et l'information des clients dans les etals de boucherie.
Malheureusement, la peur de donner aux communautes religieuses impliquees le sentiment d'etre stigmatisees, ainsi que la pression du lobby boucher font opposer a ces propositions de loi une forte reticence, voire resistance. Pourtant le sujet n'entend pas entrer dans le champ des questions religieuses ou de politique interieure et reste rigoureusement attache a la seule preoccupation du respect des droits de l'animal d'elevage a subir son sort tragique dans la moindre souffrance possible.
La petition ci-jointe adressee directement aux autorites concernees de l'etat francais a pour seul but de soutenir ces propositions visant a reduire le nombre d'animaux abattus en toute conscience sur le territoire national et a enrayer de ce fait la progression rapide de ce mode d'abattage largement constatee et en infraction de la loi, en reclamant entre autre l'instauration d'un label mentionnant sur la viande exposee, conditionnee ou en vitrine, la methode employee pour executer l'animal dont elle est issue.

Supermarkets and Food Producers in Europe - indeed, all over the world - are selling us halal slaughtered meat and other products without our knowledge.
We are demanding compulsory halal labelling to be introduced for all food producers and supermarkets in the EU and elsewhere.
The National Media recently disclosed the fact that Halal slaughtered meat products are being served and sold in numerous food outlets and supermarkets across our country without our knowledge.
The politically correct wool is being pulled over our eyes and we must take a stand to protect our own culture, beliefs, national pride and our own human rights.
KENTUCKY FRIED CHICKEN (KFC) are having a trials in 74 of their branches to adhere to strict HALAL practices. Whilst they purport to meet with rigorous animal welfare practices in the killing of the animals there is one requirement and that is a VERSE of the KORAN is cited at the time of slaughter and all animals are killed in the name of ALLAH!
GREAT BRITAIN is a Christian country and we believe that having a halal KFC goes against BRITISH values. Halal is an ISLAMIC dietary practice in a MUSLIM religion.

Halal is a religious/ritual way of slaughtering animals, which could be considered by many as very cruel and inhumane. It is where the animal’s throat is cut, whilst scriptures from the Koran are read over it – The animal is then left to bleed-to-death, as a way of cleansing its body and soul!
Many people are not aware of what Halal is or the process involved in producing it. There are also many people (namely Sikhs) who can not eat Halal due to religious reasons.
Halal has now become widely available, but in most cases it is not advertised! Takeaways and restaurants serve Halal without informing the public (it is possible, some people would simply not eat Halal if they knew how the meat was slaughtered).
There should be a Halal Awareness campaign to educate the public of what Halal is and how it is prepared, and then clearly marked in all food outlets so that people can make an informed choice! This is as much for Muslims as for non-Muslims.
Also, the Food Regulatory Authorities and Animal Welfare should investigate the process and its legality in this country - After all, this is not an Islamic country.

Apologists for Ritual Slaughter claim that it is both quick and humane. We say that this imported ritual isn't - it is barbaric, cruel and wholly unnecessary. In addition ritually slaughtered meat should not be clandestinely fed to our kids in their school dinners - as is happening in hundreds of schools up and down the country at present!
Does your kids' school secretly serve up ritually slaughtered meat in their meals? If you don't know then we urge you to find out!
Parents and pupils alike should contact their schools to demand that any ritually slaughtered meat used in school catering be clearly labelled as such, so as to provide freedom of choice for the vast majority of pupils who, quite rightly, have no wish to participate in the most prolific form of animal cruelty practiced in Britain today!

This petition calls for all religous slaughter of animals without prestunning to be banned as it causes much suffering and is unnecessary.
This cause is supported by the Farm animal Welfare Council, Viva! and various organisations.
