1. South Dakota Against Refugee Resettlement Program

There are currently 2 primary refugee resettlement sites in South Dakota.

There is one in Sioux Falls and another in Huron. There has been talk that they are going to make Aberdeen a primary site also. Lutheran Social Service is the group that is bringing the refugees to our state. They are receiving an average of $5,000-$8,000 per refugee that they bring in.

The FBI director has said there is no way to properly vet these refugees. Last year, a Congressional Research Service report shared "that 74 percent of the refugees who arrived in the past five years were on food stamps, 56 percent were accessing Medicaid, 47 percent were receiving cash assistance, and 23 percent were in public housing. Only 11 percent were getting health insurance through an employer."

Please join us in telling our Governor and elected officials that enough is enough.

On the orders of the Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) and the Nigerian Army, heavily-armed soldiers and mobile police officers invaded Gosa 1 village, located along the Airport Road, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and demolished homes, businesses, churches, mosques, schools, farmlands, crops, shrines, and important cultural relics belonging to indigenous Gbagyi farmers and low-income residents.

The Thursday, April 26, 2012 demolitions - carried out without prior notice, payment of compensation or provision of alternate shelter - left thousands homeless, including children, the youth, women and the aged people who had lived on the land from time immemorial.

Ten days after the demolitions, scores of families continue to live near the ruins of their demolished homes because "they have no where else to go", and cannot afford the soaring rental costs in the city.

3. Stop the Dams in Sudan!

Having experienced the effects of the Merowe Dam on the environment of the Fourth Cataract region (flooding), the local people (forced resettlement), and their past and present culture (drowned), we are extremely concerned that the Sudanese Government seems ready to implement four more hydropower projects in northern and eastern Sudan.

This means that there will be three dams constructed on the River Nile, one at the Dal Cataract, one at Kajbar in the Third Cataract, and one at Shereik in the Fifth Cataract. The fourth dam will be built on the Atbara River, the last tributary of the Nile. None of these dams is actually necessary given the existence of alternative sources for energy production.

None of these dams has the consent of the local population who will be the ones most affected by the dam implementations.

4. Change U.S. Policy to Save North Korean Refugee Children in China

This Petition was started to lobby for the change of prohibitive U.S. Policy that makes it virtually impossible for North Korean refugees, in particular the young orphaned children, who are currently living in fear and hiding in China, to seek asylum and resettlement in the U.S. Countless thousands of these young children live on the streets under the constant threat of hunger, exploitation, abuse, arrest and repatriation. Recent crackdowns by the Chinese, who treat these refugees as illegal aliens, have worsened the situation, and immediate action is critical to saving these fragile lives.
