Yuma AZ has a extremely large agricultural industry this coupled with the fact it is directly on the border of Mexico means many Mexican families immigrate for work. Because of this over 40% of the overall population in Yuma speak spanish and there is a very established presence in the community. In the most recent polls it shows that 66% or 23,400 people of the Spanish speaking community also speak English fluently in their homes. This means their children are raised in multilingual homes and are fluent in both languages. Gila Ridge High school does not however offer them the right to learn a foreign language, the only language courses offered are English and Spanish. This is a direct violation of the students rights to the equal education their monolingual classmates receive.
