The vast majority of Australia’s egg laying hens today spend their short lives warehoused with hundreds of thousands of others. They are confined in cages, smaller than the size of an A4 piece of paper, in which they are unable to exercise the bulk of their natural behaviours such as preening, nesting, stretching their wings and even turning around.
There are more compassionate alternatives such as free range!
We the undersigned call on the University of Wollongong to support a more compassionate way of egg production and follow the example of American Universities such as Harvard, Princeton and Berkeley, and the Australian example of the University of Newcastle by selling only free range eggs in food outlets.
