East Sussex County Council recently reduced the speed limit through Hellingly Village to 20mph. However to the astonishment and horror of parents the Council then increases the speed limit to 40mph for the last 200 yards of the narrow road which is the access point to a 200 strong Primary school and a 40 pupil Preschool on the opposite side.

Children's ages range from 2 to 11 and parents are deeply concerned as at peak times they are parking from the 40mph point right past and round the corner of the school into another 40mph road. A resident commented saying "With a 10 minute window to get the children into school it gets very busy and little ones are not very road aware. We often see white vans speeding past us as very often cars meet each other nose to nose and one of them has to back up. I am shocked at the lack of common sense and disregard for child safety."

The council says if and when accidents happen they will consider amending the speed limit, but the budget is stretched as it is and they have to be careful with how they spend tax payers money.

We the residents call on East Sussex County Council to extend the new speed limit reduction of 20mph on Station Road to include the last 200 yards of the road. It is currently 40mph and as the access point for the 200 child strong Hellingly Primary School and roughly 30 child strong Hellingly Pre-School, we feel this is an unsafe and irresponsible speed limit for the most vulnerable part of the road. Child ages range from 2 to 11 years old.
