Australia

Unfortunately common courtesy is becoming not so common on Transperth. While many commuters are kind and lovely, using public transport when you are unwell and in need of a priority seat can feel like entering a jungle.

I am currently going through my second pregnancy and have experienced some gobsmackingly rude and incivil behaviour. This is at a time when you feel quite vulnerable and emotional anyway.

This is not about entitlement - it is about safety. It is simply unsafe for vulnerable people to be left standing, pushed and shoved on crowded trains and buses. For the avoidance of doubt, it is also not about men vs. women but about creating a safer (and more pleasant) Transperth for everyone.

We, the undersigned, ask that Transperth look into trialling ways of alerting people seated on priority seats that someone less able to stand has gotten on the train.
The recent trial of Bluetooth beacons in Busan City could be a useful model. Using beacons makes things easier for people whose need may not be immediately visible. It would also make it obvious when passengers on priority seats are wilfully ignoring a person in need.
Even if a full implementation proves too expensive, a trial could raise awareness of daily incivility.
