In March 2011, Nash County an 11 year boy was struck by a truck that passes a stopped school bus. There was another situation where a little boy was waiting on the bus and when crossing the road he was struck by a truck and the driver had been drinking. He was killed. In one day, there were a total of 3,196 counts of vehicles passing a stopped school bus in one day.

In the national count last year, there were a total of 88,025 violations in one day. Sure they passed a tougher penalty for drivers that hit and kill a child boarding the bus to a Class H felony, but do they have to wait for a child to be hit to enforce the harsher punishment.

We, the undersigned, call on Nathan Baskerville, NC House of Representative, to call on a tougher punishment other than revoking their license for one year, for passing a stopped school bus.

Does it really take a child to get seriously injured or killed before the serious punishment or receive automatic jail time of 30, 60, or 90 days for this serious violation.

If we are strict on these violators from the start, it just may reduce the amount of violations and most importantly, reduce the statistical amount of children injured or hit by a vehicle.

We, as adults, have to fight this battle for our children to keep them safe.
