Several Tony Award Acceptance Speeches are recorded by CBS but not televised live, in order to trim down the broadcast to fit into the time constraints. The Best Choreographer Award and Acceptance Speech is NOT televised live.
Can you imagine a musical with no choreography? Dance is a huge part of the storytelling. It is one of the most integral parts of a performance, and is grossly under-recognized. One way to honor the role of choreography in a show, is to include it in the Live Tony Award broadcast on CBS.
Can you imagine Broadway without Bob Fosse, Bob Avian and Michael Bennett, Gower Champion, Bill T. Jones, Kathleen Marshall, Jerry Mitchell, Jerome Robbins, Susan Stroman, Andy Blankenbeuhler, Savion Glover, Mia Michaels or so many other talented choreographers? Can you imagine A Chorus Line, West Side Story, 42nd Street, Cats, Hello, Dolly!, Chicago, Bring In 'Da Noise, Bring In 'Da Funk without the amazing choreography?
This petition is urging the CBS Television Network and the Tony Awards Management Committee to ensure that the Best Choreographer Acceptance Speech is included in this year's LIVE broadcast.
(The Tony Awards Management Committee is made up of representatives of the Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing. It oversees the Tony Awards, with emphasis on the television broadcast.)
