June 2004

Tham Sarki is an asylum seeker from Nepal who faces deportation. Nepal is in the midst of a war between a despotic monarchy and a popular resistance movement fighting to change the government. Already almost 5,000 people have been killed since the start of the war in 1996.

Tham was a member of the resistance movement and was forced to flee Nepal in 2001. He is now on the government 'wanted-list'- a warrant has recently been issued for his arrest.

He would be immediately imprisoned if he were deported. Political activists in the opposition face torture and routine execution at the hands of the armed forces.

According to a recent report by Amnesty International there are regular, 'extra judicial executions, 'disappearances', torture arbitrary arrests and detention and unfair trails.' (Nepal: Amnesty International, April 2002)

Tham Prasad Sarki (Home Office Ref:S1129523)
Amnesty International and human rights organisations in Nepal have recorded a dramatic rise in the number of human rights violations since the collapse of the ceasefire in August 2003.

The civil war has taken its toll on the civilian population claiming 8,000 lives since its start in 1996. Amnesty has issued over 110 Urgent Actions in the last four months on behalf of civilians who are feared to have "disappeared" after arrest by the Government's security forces. Torture is reported daily and rape is reported frequently. Unlawful killings by the security forces have been a long-standing concern.

Since the beginning of the war, hundreds; possibly thousands of Nepalese have been killed in this way.
Tham Sarki fled this conflict in 2001 and has since been living and studying in Lewisham.

We implore you to grant the right for Tham Prasad Sarki to remain in Britain.
