SYDNEY (CP) — The family of a Cape Breton man recovering from a stroke in Japan collected more than $14,000 at a weekend fundraiser to aid in their attempt to bring him home for medical treatment. His condition remains stable and he is recovering slowly, but the family wants to transport him back to Canada where the majority of his friends and family live.

Francis moved to Japan to teach English six years ago and was working as an information technology engineer. His aunt Paulette Mason says the family was amazed at the generosity shown by the community at the benefit dance held at the Whitney Pier Royal Canadian Legion on Saturday. To date the family has raised about $45,000, but in order to transport Mason home they’ll have to raise at least another $100,000.
