The Federal Government and the European Union will be engaged in talks about agriculture. The EU is pushing for Canada to support legislation for a strict interpretation of Plant Breeders Rights. If passed this would prohibit farmers saving seed from one year to the next.

The USC for many years has sponsored “Seeds of Survival” where indigenous farmers have been encouraged to save the seed from varieties suited to local soil and growing conditions. In addition they have been establishing Seed Banks where the most suitable seeds are banked so that if there is a crop failure local seed will be available.

This process acknowledges the skills and plant breeding knowledge of farmers and helps them maintain a food crop for their families and communities which does not rely on high cost inputs of western farming methods.

We, the undersigned, are members of CUC member congregations and support a special resolution at the AGM in Victoria which would urge the Federal Govt. not to pass legislation that would call for a strict interpretation of Plant Breeders Rights which would endanger farmers and directly prevents their independence.

The resolution will be circulated in hard copy at the AGM and requires 15 delegates from 5 congregations.
