Since 2005, a group of Mattapan residents (organized as the Mattapan Library Art Committee [MLAC] by the Boston Public Library and the Boston Art Commission) have worked to advance public art at our new branch library; and to no avail.

When the new branch library building was proposed, residents were recruited to form the MLAC to work closely with the architects to ensure that areas were reserved in the building's design for the public art installations that were to follow.

When the building was dedicated, the City of Boston announced via press release, "New Exterior Artwork to be Featured at Mattapan Branch of the Boston Public Library: Nationally Renowned Artist Stu Schechter to Create Sculpture' (Sept. 23, 2009).

After a decade, however, it has grown increasingly clear to the MLAC that the Boston Art Commission--the agency tasked with 'facilitating' public art in Boston--is stonewalling the project.

We, the undersigned, are concerned citizens urging Mayor Marty J. Walsh, Julie Burros, and the Boston Arts Commission to act now to forward public artwork anticipated in the architectural design of the Mattapan Branch Library and announced by the City of Boston via press release dated 9/23/2009.
