Mayor Sam Katz

Did You Know?

More Canadians are diagnosed with lung cancer than any other kind of cancer. This year, it is estimated that 22,200 Canadians will be diagnosed with lung cancer.

More people die from lung cancer than breast cancer, colorectal cancer and prostate cancer combined.

One in 12 Canadians will develop lung cancer during his/her lifetime.

Smoking causes most lung cancers. However, about half of patients who are diagnosed have never smoked (15%) or are former smokers (35%).

Most lung cancers are diagnosed in late stages, due in part to lack of effective screening procedures.

Lung cancer patients and their family members are often stigmatized by a widespread prejudice about smoking, and many feel isolated and hesitant to tell others about their diagnosis.

Lung cancer receives little public or media attention. This is due, in part, to a small community of survivors to bring a voice and attention to lung cancer issues.

My mom Maria, a healthy 65 year old was diagnosed 19 months ago with Lung Cancer. She ate well, excercised daily and refrained from drinking, drugs or smoking. She followed all the rules of yearly check ups and screening procedures. You can imagine the shock and sadness when we got the diagnosis. What was even more shocking was the lack of resources, support and updated research made available to the patients fighting this dreaded disease.

All cancers are awful.

Thankfully there is alot of education out there on behalf of many cancers. Lung Cancer is one of the number one killers and yet, the awareness isn't there. Can you help change that???

We, the undersigned, call on the Mayor of Winnipeg, Mr. Sam Katz, Our members of Parliament and the Lung Cancer association of Manitoba, to help us raise the much needed attention to Lung Cancer and declare a national Lung Cancer Awareness Month.
